No excuse for using private vehicles. The answer there was simple, deduct the 2.5 hours off her deliver round and leave that in the office for the manager to sort out.

And? You and paid to work from your start time until your finish time, if RM cannot provide you with a vehicle that is not your problem, you either work OT to finish or you work to time and it is their problem. When they brought in vans for deliveries they must have thought about breakdowns and the fact there are no spare vehicles.

Actually, they probably didn't give it a 2nd thought.

On over time , half delivery in my car today ...... and line manager knew about it . No attempt was made to stop me using my own car because there was NO other RM van available. Not bad for 4 hours over time I finished in couple of hours.

Was that meant to annoy people ?

As for you comment, "not bad, I was done in a few hours" did you deduct the fuel you used and the wear and tear on your vehicle ?
I bet you didn't :thumbdown

I am £40 better off, made 2 hours ....... for the sake of 2 miles driving .... not bad at all. Love this job ... easy money and it was so hard working in chicken factory . 52 hours shift gross £294. Now I take home nearly £350 for 39 hours and plenty of over time available. I do not mind using my car for OVER TIME delivery work ........ Lovely Jubbly. :Very Happy :Very Happy

So you don't care about this then? [Read this below, an earlier post by TBT on the previous page]
With the attitude you have, it sounds Gung Ho to say the least, as it's basically F*** you Jack I'm alright, despite what TBT said in his post.

Actually the manager is also liable and could be prosecuted under H&S legislation, and so could RM.

Its not up to them, they are carrying out a criminal act and as with any crime that could result in death, no matter how unlikely, people have a personal responsibility to take action to stop it, or the consequences will be on their conscience.

http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/08/news1034.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Dave Joyce the CWU's National Health & Safety officer has written to Ninian Wilson,Royal Mail's Operations Director this week asking for private cars to be banned on delivery.

Dave wrote to Ninian after a postie using his car on his delivery in Brentwood,Essex knocked down and killed a 63 year old woman.

Dave wrote "This latest fatality is yet another good reason why private car use on deliveries needs to be "banned". Initially it should be strictly controlled and then completely banned ASAP. I am writing to urge your attention to this matter and to swiftly ban the use of private cars on delivery, if Royal Mail is serious about improving safety, this course of action has no alternative."

"The facts following an investigation by the CWU Area Safety Representative Paul Rew is that the Delivery Office Manager has failed to discharge Royal Mail's health and safety duty of care to staff employed by Royal Mail and to members of the public who may be affected by Royal mail operations. The Manager has failed to ensure there is no risk to the health and safety of the staff.

The DOM hasn't undertaken documentary checks as required in Royal Mail's policy and checked drivers licences, insurance and MOT certificates. There has been no Safety Checks undertake on staff's cars being used on delivery. None of the Brentwood DO staff (at the time of the accident) had been 'authorised' to use their cars and none had been instructed by the DOM to sign the Royal Mail private car user's declaration for authorisation and business use insurance cover."
In March 1997 Royal Mail faced charges at Gloucester Magistrates Court after a young Postman at Stroud DO was killed whilst using a private vehicle on delivery after being involved in an RTA.Royal Mail were found guilty and paid fines and costs of £30,000.

It seems to me especially after Dave Joyce listed other incidents that lessons have not been learnt on either side,The CWU from memory do not push this enough and Royal Mail turn a blatant eye to what is going on.

In my DO for instance there have not been any checks for nearly 5 years, casuals when we have had to use them the 1st question asked are, have you got a car.
Then there is the other side,10s of '000s muppet posties using their cars in this manner everyday. While all the security checks in the world could not stop an accident, these posties really have to ask themselves.............why?

The chances of you having an accident are greatly increased and as in the case's of other postal workers you could be imprisoned as well, and live with various consequences for the rest of your life.

It's people like you who end up screwing the rest of the workforce over by totally disregarding H&S and safe working practices etc.
I bet your manager is laughing at you for doing this for them.
Saving them the use of an authorised vehicle that is fit for purpose, unlike your vehicle, which I doubt very much has been authorised for use, let alone even been checked by RM to ensure that it's fit for purpose (safety checks etc)

I'm not bothered if you want to do overtime, well done you if you want to do it.

But please, just use official RM vehicles and not your own.

Will you be as happy when stopped by the police and done for no insurance? Your car could end up being crushed. Also, officially as you are not supposed to be using your own car, can you explain why you have mail in it please sir? Could be construed as theft, prove you intended to deliver it and not take it home to dump it in your shed. When the s**t hits the fan your boss will deny knowing anything about you using your own car and hang you out to dry.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

What are you going to say to the police when you are caught and charged with driving without insurance? And then when they crush your car how many hours ot are you going to have to do to replace it?
