Two duties are paired up for van share. Duty '1' has shorter loops, farms and other places that can't be walked, maybe even a hamlet or village not far away. This obviously can't be done by the walker (the passenger) so whoever does Duty '1' is the driver. Duty '2' is the passenger, who walks, usually with a trolley, gets dropped off and picked up at certain places, doesn't do large packets.

Oh, and the driver has to drive around like a loon trying to get numerous specials done by 1pm.

So does suitability for driver or walker get taken into account?

It's handy if the driver has a driving licence.

Yes the a non driving licence holder simply doesn't pick the driving duty

Yes. What if the walker only has one leg, but less seniority, he still gets to hop the loops? You can see what I was getting at when asking whether suitability for the desired task was considered :Very Happy

But to be a pedant, the driver selection is based on qualification not suitability.

What, that you can actually drive  I am simply trying to understand how the selection is made. If you take a hypothetical scenario of a 45 year old selected as a driver and a 75 year old as the walker. Is it going to work effectively?

sorry but you dont seem to understand what a repick is

every duty in the office will go up for signing by seniority, every duty will have whats called a 318 made up which includes in it what content the duty exactly contains ie which duties are driver duties and which are walker duties, which are HCT trolly duties etc, the office then select their duties on seniority

so Postie A decides i fancy that being the driver in Van 3
Posite B then decides i Fancy being the passenger in Van 2
Postie C decides he wants to be driver in Van 5
Postie D Decides he wants HCT duty 6 etc
this goes down the list till all the spaces are taken up,

now if a postie has an issue which is covered by the equalities act and a resonable adjustment has been agreed with him, RM and OH Assist, ie he struggles to walk and must be a driver, his duty will be planned and ring fenced for him before all the other duties start to be picked. Also in the event that there are not enough drivers then a driver who is a passenger in another van may be made to move to cover the driving duty, also sometimes depending on how the revision was planned there may be part time only duties which are also ring fenced

It is not a case of two posties selecting a van then deciding who is the driver afterwards

IT depend who can drive the vehicle and whoever is working together. If both person can do driving duty, sometimes they share the duty or swap each week, but it all depends on the pairs.

Ok, we are getting there. This is the bit that I have heard conflicting stuff about. So is it the case that RM dictate who should drive and they sign the log book and there can be no deviation, or is it down to the pairs to carve it up and perhaps chop and change between driving and walking?

This shouldn't be happening. In theory when you sign up for a duty you just do that duty. I suppose if you have a good reason you could ask the manager if it's OK to swap with your partner. No doubt partners swap and the manager knows and says nothing, but as always, what happens when something goes wrong? He'll ask you about a missing special and you'll have to say well, actually, I wasn't doing my duty that day, I was doing the other duty. Can of worms if you ask me. Just do your own duty unless told different by the manager.

I don't know what the problem is, my van share duty means that I sign the van out so I do all the driving..........the loops are designed around that and both of us understand that, maybe the problem is people not being able to work together.

the person who signed for the driving duty is the driver, if the pair want to swap about between themselves then as long as both drivers and both agree no real issue there, but its not RM who pick the driver, the person who picked the driving duty in the repick is the driver

If it the usual pair who have signed for the two walks the person who signed for the driver duty should only drive the van. That doesn't mean pairs don't swapped but its best to cover your own back, for instance if a complaint is made on your duty you will be the one who gets in trouble as that's the walk you were meant to do.

Im a duty holder on a part time non walker duty but have been doing the drivers loops for 2 weeks as they have put me with a non driver and just got me to do double prep on OT. Also with another guy who can driver but does not like too. Had a problem last week when they put a driver with me who had never done the walk but insisted on doing the driving and since he was down to cover the driving duty i said nothing. Problem was he didn't know the walk and did not do a single bulk parcel but instead sat in the van for 5-10 on some loops on facebook.
