I stopped using my car on delivery years ago. I remember the first week I did I booked three hours extended, that was due to waiting for and travelling on busses and walking back to pouch boxes for packets I couldn't get rid of.

It depends on the insurance companies definitions and what you are actually doing.

As a general rule, business use will only cover you driving to the start of your duty, it will not cover delivering from it. But then some business use insurance won't cover even carrying 1 item of mail in the car.

If your office hasn't been through a DM revision then the RM Bond covers you. If you have had a CDV revision the bond is withdrawn and even with the correct business use insurance you won't be covered because Royal Mail have not given you permission.

Despite having a revision a while back it still goes on in my office every day! Nobody cares about the rules, and we have been through quite a few DOMs and not one has said anything. They will allow ANYTHING to get the mail out of the door. A mad mad place to work! It amazes me the variations from office to office and area to area. Its hard to believe we all work for the same company.

If you HAVE been through a revision then ANYONE using their cars on delivery is NOT COVERED by their insurance, even if they have courier level cover. Royal Mail have removed the bond when an office converts to CDVs, which means the drivers do not have permission to drive from their employer. If your insurance company requires you to have this permission, then if you use a private car on delivery without it, you are BREAKING THE LAW.

Simples - the bosses are turning a blind eye because they think they can get away with it. They can't, if the HSE can prove that managers are aware that cars are being used on delivery, even without permission, then they can be prosecuted if one of the cars has an accident and the cause was wholly or partly because of the condition of the vehicle, more especially so if they haven't taken any steps to cease PCODs.

Sometimes it is very hard to believe we work for a national company.
Frankly it is embarrassing.

It really wouldn't have been too hard for union and management to sit down and agree a date whereby all cars would be removed from delivery, regardless of the state of revision activity in that area, and have made it quite plain that anyone using or sanctioning the use of a private car on delivery would be sacked.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It is illegal to use your private car on duty, you are completely uninsured. Even separate individual business insurance is exempt for Royal Mail staff. Once you arrive at your office you must use a company vehicle. You may not even travel to your first/last delivery point without mail. DOM's may travel between offices and to meetings in their own car, but should use a company van for doing obs or delivering mail.

:hmmmm Job and knock still goes on then............well if you haven't had a revision more than 4 years after the agreement, which I find totally inexcusable, you should still be working for every hour paid - I just wonder how many would be tear arsing round finishing 2 hours early and having 2 hours docked from their pay a lot less than now I'd wager.

As long as you sign all the due paperwork, Royal Mail insurance will cover you.
