A little knowledge about your office is all that is needed, you need to know how the make up of the office has been agreed in the last revision, so then if someone leave you know he is going to be replaced with someone on same amount of hours, and if the vacancy notice either doesnt go up or is put up with less hours you know that the dom is doing something that has not been agreed to by your office, then get onto the area rep and get him to lodge a disagreement about it, dont fight the manager yourself get the rep/area rep to do what he is supposed to be doing
chrisj wrote:Do you get newsletters in your office or does your rep organise private meetings to discuss things? Either way, we do not have a Rep and the office in general is not that bothered. In fact, the only way I heard was when job was advertised and others start talking about managers being asked to reduce hours - so manager has chats with the usual suspects (cliques).
In our office the manager allows time at the end of the WTL for the rep to speak to union members as group if they wish to stay and listen(some do some just go back to work)
chrisj wrote:Those of us that thinks that we should know what is going on end up banging heads against the brick wall and no support from colleagues - on the contrary; a lot of ridicule and snidy comments.

The issue does not affect the majority that matters - such is life in some offices.
Simple answer dont rely on those colleagues,

Your office needs a volunteer to be the rep, failing that if you want to know whats going on, just keep calling the area rep, remember you elected him he is there to help you as members, whether that be helping you to get someone to volunteer to be rep, or by acting as your office one till you get one there, thats what he is there for, you are paying your subs for representation in the work place amoungst other things so make sure you are getting what you are paying for

By definition, a Rep represents: you cannot represent people that do not want representation or people that might go out of there ways to sabotage efforts at unity, fairness and openness.

When you work in an office like mine then you might understand slightly. Having any sort of intelligence or being informed seems like a threat to some of my colleagues. They are ready to argue things that might against things that might end of being in their favour in future but often they cannot see past their noses and little nests, favours and privileges.

I must admit, I am a part timer looking to be a permanent full time staff in future so changing a duty from full time to part time does not help me - though there are some ahead of me but there is always a chance no one applies or interested in the post.

Why bother arguing with staff that the manager should not just go about changing duty structures/status and unilaterally reducing hours. Why? Absolutely no reason to stress myself when the majority do not care and/or antagonistic because they simply could.

We have no chance of getting a Rep. It is a lost cause. The office guys (elderly) - perhaps one-time Rep gets all the documents and works with the manager; as DOm support and/or de facto rep (with a small r). Area Rep - weak!

When it comes in, in about a month, full timers are expected to prep three frames instead of two, while the part timers will get shafted by having to work more days, which means more travel expenses, as well as later starts, which probably means getting caught in rush hour traffic.
Wigan, the facts are that our area rep was the one who actually drafted this letter and had it confirmed with the div rep :shhhhh and then past it on to the Area Manager to cascade it down to the local delivery offices. :arrrghhh :cuppa

So much for the union having the best interest of it's members and to Zx what's the point in our local rep(who is against this pile of s**t  )putting in a disagreement when the higher echelons of the union have already agreed to it.

One of the reasons cited for the attendance pattern changes was the usual 'traffic on the wane' spiel, which may be true, but it'll be funny watching a postal train wreck occur when they try to manage a heavy day like today with the skeleton staff of sorters and preppers they are proposing.

There's still procedures to follow and the area rep and divisional rep are in the wrong lodge the disagreement and go above their heads if need be to hq, I would even email moya and complain about it
