The union negotiated this as well which I find astonishingly incompetent.
Overtime costs jobs.
So while a certain amount of overtime opportunities still exists to allow people to earn an extra bit, this "incompetent" union put jobs before overtime.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Because the best part of the first £10k is not taxed/ no NI. then the O/T rate is nearly the same as normal hours.

In my case it's not so much the over time rate that is the issue... it's the tax jumping up massively thanks to the extra 1.30 hours worked.

It is really. Overtime should be at least 1.5x your normal rate. It is in most jobs. In London it's even worse as it's less than the normal hourly rate.

I agree that Overtime costs jobs, but overtime is a fact of life in the RM and they are massively benefitting from it as things currently stand.

RM don't get hit with a cost premium for posties who do overtime, so financially they are better off getting a smaller workforce to work longer hours at the rates overtime is paid at the moment.

Four posties working 10 hours overtime a week @ £9.87 per hour will only cost RM £395. However, if the posties were on time and a half it would cost RM £592............. but employing an extra postman to do the 40 hours would bring RM's costs back down to £395.

Obviously the above figures are simplistic as there are many other factors to be taken into account, but I believe posties doing loads of overtime at the standard rate is what is costing postmen their jobs.

Get the overtime rates up, and it will be more cost effective for RM to employ more posties.

Believe it or not.......... he has (sort of).

His annual pay for 20 hours a week and his personal tax free allowance are virtually the same figure, but his overtime puts him over his tax allowance so he ends up being more heavily taxed on his overtime.

For 20 hours I take home £182.15 (equating to £9.11 per hour)
For 21 hours I take home £188.71 (equating to £8.98 per hour)

So I take home an extra £6.56 for working an hour overtime (an extra £1.80 tax, £1.16 NIC and 10p pension is deducted)
I am no longer a number :-)

Until any PTer reaches 39 hours, any overtime they do above contract hours is paid at "SSPR" (£10.35 per hour), the extra pay above basic rate (£9.54) takes account of pro-rata "Delivery Supplement." Or something like that!

it doesnt have to be, just thats what most companies offer, there is no actual legal requirement for companies to even offer an over time rate

But overtime is done as and when it's needed, RM would not employ more posties in the off chance that someone goes sick etc.

Before the way forward agreement 1st 6 hours time&third, 7-13 time&half, then doubletime :nana :nana . Saturday premium(duty time) was time&half - Sat o/t Time&half. Sunday double time.. BUT !! the basic pay was crap so the O/T was essential. Nowdays a £20K postie doesnt need overtime (I dont anyway) :Very Happy .

Rate is shite  Here's hoping the new deal includes a better, realistic rate ?
