There is also the point that, if every person claiming the dole worked say, road sweeping, then how long would it be before the decide they no longer need the actual council staff employed for this purpose?
Surely, in these austere times, it wouldn't be long before some overpaid and under worked arsehole decided this would be a great way to save money?

That said, I do (and have always) think that the dole shouldn't just be given. They should be made to work in some form or other, but not potentially putting others jobs at risk.
They should also be made to attend the job centre and be supervised while filling in application forms, also.

But, yes, I agree, Gideon Osbourne is a total twat.
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.

Gideon Osborne's declaration today is simple - keep people out of work for 2 years and then make them to work for benefit rate not the minimum wage - increased profit for his mates all round! The 'hardworking' people the tories laughingly claim to represent round my area can't find work - there is naff all going. I'll probably be one of them post-privatisation when the inevitable job losses kick in. But most of the great British public just sit on their arses, watch X factor, have a moan and accept it all.
Yesterday's demo in Manchester was tremendous - we need more of them!

It depends on the work they are doing, cleaning up litter and removing graffiti was mentioned, so cash strapped councils get rid of there minimum wage litter pickers, and graffiti removal squads, and go to the DWP and get some free labour to do the jobs, these people were being under paid to do, that's without the multimillion pound companies doing the same, TNT or RM anyone. So yes serving in charity shops cleaning out kennels for the local animal rescue, collecting donated clothing, but council work, stacking shelves at your local supermarket should remain fully paid employment.

If there is no work, there is no work.
The dole was created to ensure that, in a civilised country like Britain, nobody starved, became homeless, due to the government of the day's inability to ensure that most, if not all, its citizens were gainfully employed.

Where we start to look like something out of a Charles Dickens novel, is when a government, such as the one we unfortunately suffer at present, does nothing at all to alleviate unemployment, and blames a large proportion of our citizens more than willing, but unable through no fault of their own, to find work, for their plight.
It's dishonest.
It's the action of a malicious charlatan.
It should be criminal.

Gideon wants people to do voluntary / community work for their dole, however, people doing such work in the past have had their jobseekers allowance stopped as they can't be seeking work if they are working.

They should definitely not be given over to do non-essential work for multinational companies, and they should not be working full-time hours. And they should have full employment rights including the right to holidays on the basis of accruing a day for every 10/11 days worked (that about meets the national minimum?). Unfortunately, they are basically being treated as slaves to boost the profits of already massive companies. And as you have seen with the erosion of employment rights under this coalition government, the complete sense of 'meh' towards zero-hour contracts, all that they really want is to help big business at the expense of the average working class individual.
Maybe we could include MP's on work placements and make sure they are up to the task they don't do anything in the summer sure they have the time ARE WE ALL IN IT TOGETHER after all are we not!

The only thing is MPs are incapable of doing anything else, if it wasn't for parliament they would be unemployable.

You have to give Georgie credit, he is trying to get the unemployed into work - not paying them but still getting them back into the work routine. Well we've seen it all before about 6 years ago my son was unemployed and had to work in a charity shop for nothing..............it is slave labour because if there is work then they should be paid.

Thing is, if the DWP make people work for their dole money, by doing the jobs which are currently paid at minimum wage, then the people, who have no job because the DWP Posse are now doing it.....will then be unemployed themselves, so whats the fooking point....?

Merry go round.....but no-one on it is the least bit MERRY! :evil/mad

The mad thing is, by the time they have set up yet another Govt department to implement this work for your allowances and squared away all the paperwork, it will have cost us more than anything the Govt could ever have hoped to save in the long run !!!!! Should be fun for them trying to get the genuinely sick and disabled into these programmes because it will happen for those on ESA.
