but as the dog was on her property the copper said its the end of it
It may be the end of it as far as the plod are concerned but may not be the end of it as far as compensation goes. The paper girls parents could go to a no win no fee claims firm and they may bring a civil action.
Against an 80 year old woman and her pet dog,If they do I hope they choke on it.
why does her age matter she is the dogs owner after all if it had bitten or nipped you bet you're attitude would be different.
I've been bitten a few times once bad enough to have micro surgery on my finger and hand and never felt the need to sue anybody,if it was an accident and no serious injury what good would sueing somebody do,old people worry more about these things and can be a bit forgetful. Different matter entirely if it was a full blown dog attack, they deserve everything they get then but accidents do happen,it's not a perfect world.
said 80 year old woman could be in a far better emotional state of mind as a person less than half her age, so can't really use the "poor old dear" reply
whats the difference between a full on attack and a nip? an accident is an accident as you've said.
As I was bitten by a dog in the past, I think as long the owners do something about it, and take more care in future. There is no point in sueing for one bite, but if the dog keep biting you and cause serious harm and damage then you should consider it.

Do I really have to explain that to you. Any dog that seriously attacks anyone would not have been a suitable dog to own in the first place and the owners should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, there is a world of difference between that and say a dog that runs from behind an open door and just nips someone,as long as there is no serious wound and the owner showed remorse and apologised that would do,there is always a certain amount of risk involved in anything, even being a postman or woman.

As the paper girls on private property she has no protection from the Law, same as us posties. So in the eyes of the law it's the same thing.
I've been nipped a few times by dogs on my round and I haven't sued anybody too. Doesn't necessarily mean it's ok for a 13ish year old girl though to be attacked/threatend by a dog.

Of course its not ok,I never said it was,but it's not the end of the world is it? a nip from an old ladies dog,not an attack by a 40kg pitbull.I know it was on private property I did read that but that will be changing hopefully and the owners should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law for the serious attacks, but not for thing's like this, a police caution and a warning issued,no reason to terrify an old person.
It's not the end of the world no, and hopefully as you say the law will change soon. the trouble is some of these supposed nips could be a lot more agressive than is made out at times, being a postie you'd probably know that anyway, and as the original poster said mum doesn't seem to think it matters the girl was nipped, a bit of a oh well so what, seems a lot of public thinks like this with their dogs. i wouldn't want the mums dog taken away from her either.

Common sense is what's needed, trouble is a lot of dog's have more common sense than the owners,I have large dogs, can't say what breed as it would help identify me,I am very careful with my dogs, they are not allowed where the letterbox is when there is nobody in,my back gate is padlocked and the dog's cannot get out. They are never left alone with visitors,in fact one is caged while people are visiting, they are socialised with other dogs and I consider myself a responsible dog owner but nothing is foolproof.

What are you on about, its a rescue bitch that I didn't breed so I don't take any chances,so what does that say about me mate,do you know what a dog cage is before you make your smart comments.
Get a box on her gate it would stop most incidents like this unless she gets packets that will not fit in the box if that is the case a do not enter leave card message on the box would help all but the illiterate in English hope this is helpful.

THIS is being a responsible dog owner, blows my mind that people would question it.

The owner of those dog's must be an absolute retard, she did everything wrong,5 strong willed dogs in a small area with a stranger eating food ffs what was she thinking, this is an owner that needs locking up for a long time.
