The two are not linked and RM would need to assess it on a cost/benefit basis. However there will be other carriers eager to deliver parcels on a Sat and firms will switch to these carriers IMO.CORTINA wrote: Maybe the Royal Mail will follow suit if the usa drop saturday letter deliveries... if massive savings can be made ..it would seem obvious

I think we will always be delivering on a Saturday.
I don't think that will include letters though.

Most sensible idea would be to ditch a tuesday not a saturday.

Not in my office, we struggle on a Tuesday to cope with the amount of mail...........although we struggle everyday so if they removed 1 day from us then the whole thing would collapse in my office.mclovin wrote:Most sensible idea would be to ditch a tuesday not a saturday.

I have just pointed out that the USA can save 2 billion $ by dropping saturday letter deliveries....... not specials and parcel / packets ......... a massive pro rata saving will benefit Royal Mail if they did the same.
The cost / benefit basis you talk about is obvious.. RM will reduce their cost base.... and with 5 day letter deliveries instead of 6 .... will benefit greatly in increased profits ......basic logic...
What basic letters that would go out on a saturday would therefore go out on a monday or tuesday.. ..... simple
How many other companies are cutting back or looking at ways to cut back.. RM will be not any different...
Even the POST OFFICE has annouced last week that 1 in 5 POs will close around the country and will be moved into other outlet shops or stores..Things are on the move all the time and Royal Mail will have to adapt and change and cut costs like many others... A 1 day letter delivery cost saved in hundreds of man hours less at one sorting office ... mulitplied by how many sorting offices around the UK ....
The savings will be millions a week.... at 5 million a week saved ... that is 250 million a year.. a quarter of a billion saved... even if its only 1 million a week its 50 million a year... A no brainer really... It`s Just a matter of time....

The entire reason the USPS is losing money, is due to Republican shenanigans. Without the stupid destructive law that was passed, they'd actually be posting something like $600 million profit.

Well if the US postal service is having financial problems then I have the solution - we lease lend them Moya - it worked the other way round during WW11 so it's the least we can do

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

i attended CWUs Annual General Meeting on Sunday for the SW area and one of the Delivery reps mentioned this. he said everyone thinks that its going to be a mon to fri delivery span but tuesday is just as likely to be dropped. RM have not said one way or the other.mclovin wrote:Most sensible idea would be to ditch a tuesday not a saturday.
