What is the penalty for signing a recorded for a customer under the misguided believe that one is helping the said customer? I work with a postie that signs for a firm/company - they are happy with the arrangement and even reward him with a generous tip but then they expect other posties to do the same
Yep,same here.

The chap who covers my duty cuts every single corner going, leaves parcels in bins, posts recorded letters without getting signatures & generally runs round as fast as he can.

The customers love him as it saves them a trip to the callers office, the managers love him because it saves them time + money.

Guess who gets the mither? :wave

I'm big enough to stick up for myself & it doesn't usually bother me but over Xmas, when the pressure was on,it did start to get on my t*ts a little bit.

The thing is the individual in question is actually a decent fella,I've tried to explain to him the error of his ways, but like so many he can't see the woods for the trees. :cuppa

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

The problem is,and it's been said a million times but that person you think you are helping isn't the paying customer.
If i send something recorded delivery i don't want the postie's signature.

I personally like to get mine signed for because that's what I'm paid to do and if I'm going to run out of time then I'll either cut off or book OT which is what everyone should really do.

I had the worst walk in the office and if I cut off I got threatened with the sack and if I booked OT I just wouldn't get the money, Boss always scrubbed it out.

It's quite common for postmen/women to consider the person receiving the mail as the customer and it's understandable BUT the reality is it's the sender who is really the customer and is the one who is most likely to check the whereabouts of the item and complain if there is no tracking detail and trigger an investigation. Recorded mail is an outdated method of delivery in my opinion and if it is at all possible then the Tracking system is the better option and should be brought on stream for joe public asap. As for ripping a label off.........tsk, tsk silly thing to do but not worth getting sacked for by walking out - it might be a bit embarassing at first  ...............but it'll soon pass especially when somebody else makes a silly mistake and that becomes next the topic of conversation. Do get the rep involved and tough it out if you possibly can - if necessary take a couple of days just to get things in perspective - then walk in with your head up.

Start taking notes of the overtime worked and report him. Also, speak to your union rep.

If I wasn't paid overtime. I'd cut off everyday. And I'm on a contract. But to be honest. If they did sack me, they would be doing me a huge favour.

Then you needed to get the union rep involved, the managers aren't allowed to not pay you if you work it, grievance procedure is your friend in this.

dvkbuk, the best comment I have read here for along long time. The point about being embarrassed for a while having made a silly mistake. I will remind myself of your comment next time if it happens to me because I can be just as proud as the original poster - it is best to keep one's job and/or fight for it; in this current climate, unless there is an obvious better alternative.

I don't believe this is a sack-able offence: I have known worse...

Yes, customer is the poster of the mail but customer cannot rely verify the signature of the recipient. Some of the recipient put an x as a signature or any old scribble etc. The PDA makes it even less easy to verify a signature; the old folsk struggle to work the lightpen and sometimes, we posties have to sign for them or just tell them to scribble anything.

This is not an endorsement of signing for customers (recipient) but it is the recipient that can cause most problems if the itme is wrong signed for. 'Not' signed for at all is obviously the sender of the mail- this might be more likely with ebayers on a dispute and/or the insurance companies and baillifs and councils that tend to send (these days) 2 pieces of same mail (one signed for and other normal)

Aye, Posties not obtaining a signature can cost an ebayer dear.

The customer slaps in an item not delivered claim, and the seller is completely buggered as he has no proof of delivery. So the seller loses the item, has to refund the postage and also loses the ebay fees (unless the customer agrees to cancel the transaction).

I'm in this position at the moment and it looks like I'll be waving goodbye to around £40 - I'm sure the customer got the item but I can't prove they did receive it without a signature. So, I had no choice other than to give him the benefit of the doubt and refund him. I submitted a compensation claim nearly 3 months ago, and I'm still waiting.

I'm really looking forward to becoming a Postie myself in a few weeks time :pray

Ah - I see, well when you do become a postie and you are still using ebay you'll know to use the more expensive but infinitely better Special Delivery or Parcelforce. As for being sure the customer got the item - you may think he got it but you can't be sure can you?

Scrubbing of o/t is theft and you cannot be forced to work beyond your finish time. Make sure you also take your meal break allowance. Join the union if your not in it and take out a grievance. I did and my DOM backed off and found others to abuse instead.

Recorded delivery 'when it's done right' is a good service,a small price to pay to prove that the stuff you sent out has been recieved.
It's us (some) that f**k it up.

I find it amazing how many posties don't know the difference between international items and recorded items.....often marking their p739 cards wrong....many times without tracking numbers too.... :Very Happy :Very Happy
