I was with you up until this point....
To be honest the Blade Runner scenario sounds more realistic.

The bottom line is that RM letters deliveries will be replaced by technology of instant contact means like skype or Ipad facetime or iphone etc.... saying the economic situation getting better will not increase letter posting by the public....letter posting is in major yearly decline.....

One example .... I was recently on a tour in Canada taking my ipad ... the coach had Wifi on board an i was able to talk live to relatives back home in the UK and show them the view live out of the coach window as we travelled along..... others with ipads and iphones were doing the same...Talking also when we got to our hotels...and sending photos by e-mail.....letters and postcards a growing thing of the past...live photos and video is the growing in thing now....

Technology has moved on and letter writing being the major way of communicating years ago ... has been surpassed by modern and instant means of communication..... delivering a probable 50% of todays volume of letters in 2025 will prove to be not cost affective as everything must make a good profit in todays terms.... and costs of delivering letters with increased postie wage cost etc will probably be a £1 stamp needed in 2025....

The amount of letters written in 2025 will probably be a shadow of todays volume.... but plenty of junk mail no doubt or maybe more of a shift to electronic junk mail instead to add to RM letter volume woes.....

Job security must now be a worrying issue after 2020 if first class stamps change to a 2 or 3 day service instead of next day service...less posties will be needed ...unless 2 posties are put in a van to deliver increased parcel volumes...which seems unlikely...... and half of posties could be gone is collection points are introduced and door deliveries of basic letters are suspended in years to come....

I think most will admit that letter volumes will drop dramaticially by 2025 and therefore 25% of staff will not be needed.....being so labour intensive to deliver to every house 6 days a week it cannot be sustained much longer as the public move more to electronic means of communication every year...

Bank statements, insurrance policies, utility bills and sent electronic birthday and xmas cards etc... can all be sent, saved or printed online... the next generation will treat it like the norm as may do now... even the landline phone will probably be gone by 2025 with no telephone cables to service by BT a major saving to them.... with of course job losses.

As we all know its all about money and profits......... and life is mainly based on money..... if aint making enough money shut it down and move on... thats life.

It may have been all said before ..but a reality check in getting your future into prospective before workforce reductions take play in years to come is not a bad thing.... not taking on major financial comittments without long term job security is point in question...and a problem with RMs future.

Something similar to the surplus Xmas packet runners we have these days, but all year round, with a masssively reduced workforce and OPGs going out singly in a small van covering areas equivalent to the size of ~3 walks today... Because we will basically be just another parcel delivery firm by then, as instant electronic communication will be used by the vast majority.

No doubt the rounds will be still unachievable yet agreed through the revisons process, needing a delivery rate of 30 packet per hour when 20 is more realistic!

If RM ends up eventually being just another parcel firm then I think it would be based on Tracked with Specials having been replaced at some point with Tracked High Value

I think it will end up much like some places abroad. There will be no delivery service except in major cities

I used to live in Spain and there (at least where i lived), every person just had their own box/ locked slot at a local collection office. You had your own key to your box and went there whenever you liked 24/7 and picked up all of your mail/parcels. They put a card in your box if you had a parcel and you'd collect it separately during manned hours No posties, no vans, just a few staff manning the office during the day to keep an eye on things/ hand over parcels and i guess some regional sorting centres. Public and businesses could pay extra for a bigger box if they required it. It ran itself much like our self-access storage units here with very low overheads.

The downside is that the service was rubbish, mail went missing all of the time. But from Royal Mails point of view, it would be a very profitable idea and that is all they care about... profit! They would get rid of 95% of the staff. RM currently pays approx. £40 million per week in staff wages. How many warehouses could they buy and turn into self service collection centres with that if they got rid of 95% of staff?

You have hit the nail on the head..........

It is heading in that direction...most big business cuts staff to create profits..... and pressures the remain workers to work harder or lose their job.......

Once the notion of collection points is put into practice ..... that will be it ...staff cuts........a 2 or 3 day first class stamp delivery service...and a 5 day week ...will be the start of a new round of cost and staff cutting...

All major postal services are reporting lower or loss making revenues.... dhl, ups, tnt, usa postal service..fedex

Due to electronic instant global commication.......

The downside is that the world is heavly reliant ON electricity to a dangerous situation..... if a major power plant is wiped out in the UK...... massive trouble for a long time ............2 plants down.... major trouble and confusion ...and riots...

One of our Managers does - in fact he shouts it across the office occasionally. Not sure if he knows he is being Ironic.

Some good points made on here so I won't repeat them, only thing I will repeat is that I think in 10 years time, many of us might look back on 2012 as the good old days, because things are only gona get worse.

Pay and conditions will comntinue to be eroded gradually as the push for efficiency and profits puts more and more strain on us lot.

Would have been interesting to see what answers were given if this same question had been asked in 2002.
“Shorts,in this weather?!”

“If they’re bills I don’t want ‘em!”

“What’s she been ordering now?”

Also depends what government we have, if Conservatives remain in power for any length of time, then we will be pretty much doomed.

It is hard to know, but I am planning to get out in couple of years time with EVR once I get past 42 to get bigger lump. (20 months time) if I ever get a suitable offer. But there is no point planning that far ahead.

For Royal Mail I can see reduction of service and drop in Junk Mail, once they realised Junk Mail isn't effective advertising anymore.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Door to door piles on fire off the shoulder off Orion. I watched picket lines glitter in the darkness near the delivery office gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like overtime on a dodgy manager's docket. Time to die." :nana
