the reason they call it telemetry is to mask the actual reason that they want it installed as they talk about data on your driving habits /skills but in reality it's big brother. the system when inplace will be able to 'flag up' someone if needbe and if that person goes home etc.. it will signal on screen and they will then able to check your wherabouts in real time and on return to the office will no doubt ask for an explanation. this is not telemtry it's watching no doubt yet more admin staff to watch over the drivers (jobs for the boys)

Imagine what might happen if you stopped for your break , un-wrapped the TIN FOIL from your sandwiches and said TIN FOIL accidently fell on top of the ariel of the unit.......The signal might never get through .....You'd only discover your mistake when you got back to the depot and were cleaning out your vehical

RM might have asked for a volume discount.Rizla wrote:I spoke to a mechanic today who has been fitting these "trackers". He reckons that it is costing £500 per vehicle to fit these things AND £28 per month, per vehicle to run. I found out the following info on the Internet....."Royal Mail has a fleet of over 30 000 vehicles".
SO..., 30 000x£500=£15million. 30 000x(£28x12)=£10million & eighty thousand. Total cost for the first year, including fitting = £25million and eighty thousand!!!!!!!
That seems a hell of a lot of money to spend on vans BUT,,,,,,, just remember that £40million has just recently been spent on bosses bonuses!!!!
I hope that somebody who is "in the know" will correct me if I'm wrong with this info but if I'm right, that means that RM has spent over £65million on bosses and vans in the last couple of months! All this.....and they say they have NO money for a decent pay rise and when the pension fund is £6.5BILLION in deficit.
I smell a rat!!!!!!

Re: Vehicle Telemetry
We have had telemetry in our vans for about nearly 2 yrs ,and let me tell you straight away ITS NOT SOLELY about your driving .They will be used to batter one postman against another and if your van is stationery with engine running for more than 5 mins , you will be pulled about WASTING TIME !!.When they were introducing this ,they were asked would they be used to batter one postman against another the reply was no
you all know the story !!

Re: Vehicle Telemetry
We now have 44 vehicles, each one fitted with telemetry, up to now there has been no indication that any control is being exercised.

Re: Vehicle Telemetry
I bet some Royal Mail boss somewhere has come up with a new money saving idea where they will pay £500 for these trackers and save on OT by making those lazy and crafty drivers work to their time! What will actually happen is everyone will actually keep to the speed limits and everything will take longer and cost them more money.
I have an idea why dont they use the money to buy decent PDA's that work properly and save time that way?
And for the safety aspect of these trackers, what will happen if these drivers are found to be driving 'dangerously'? At my DO the drivers hate the job and would much rather go back to being normal posties. They constantly beg people to take the RM drivers test and everyone refuses!

Re: Vehicle Telemetry
at my office we have had telemetry for years. Managers can look at them so see where you are on your route, what speed you are travelling etc. One guy was taking off driving because he had several incidents of harsh acceleration within a short distance, this was after a member of the public complained about his driving. We are commonly told off for not turning the engine off enough when on delivery leading to unnecessary overuse of fuel. A manager will say "you only turned your engine off twice while on delivery yesterday, are you able to justify that? if you can no problem. However, and this is IMPORTANT, we are now using telemetry to our advantage. If a manager criticises you for claiming overtime, ask him to have a look at the telemetry and tell you where you could have gone quicker. The more they give us to do in the time the more we can use the telemetry to our advantage.
