James, thanks for the reply. The assessments you are talking about? Do it on your home PC?

At the interview, what happens? Seems I'm asking a lot, but I want to be prepared. What happens with the medical form? Do they ask for a medical examination or call your GP or something?

Yes the assesment is on your home P.C first assesment is just postcodes, the second is address and postcode, At the interview you have to take all the documents that you recieve in the post prior to the interview. make sure you have filled them all in and take proof of I.D and Proof of address with your or they will turn you away, they then photocopy the documents and give you the interview which lasts around 30mins, they didnt ring my G.P or any of the referees I gave them, not even my old employee got a phone call but I would be sure they do a criminal check. Its very straight forward, all I did at the interview was, they asked me how I would get to work to which I replied I've just walked it from my house to time how long it would take just in case there was no transport, asked if I could ride a bike, could I carry a certain weight, and why I want to work for them, I jsut said I like working outdoors and dealing with the public. On the induction day its nothing serious, again take all documents with you and passport, you just watch videos, have a chat about "How great the company is" and thats it. No health check or anything like that, its really very simple.

Nice one, just a word of advice, if u get the job (I'm sure you will) the first few days you are on your own it will seem you are out all day, dont worry you do get quicker, it takes a couple of weeks to get into the swing of things, I've been there 12 weeks now and start at 8am and am finished between 11 and 12 most days, if you are unsure about anything I always ask a fellow postie as these will tell your more than a manager as the managers dont really give you advice or anything they just expect you to know everything straight away. All the posties will help you out with anything, there a top bunch of lads/women.

Is the official start time 8:00am? I thought it was a bit earlier.

James, what City/Town do you deliver in?

Looks like the recruitment procedure is'nt as complex as it used to be. I know that recently one of the new recruits at my office failed to disclose something on his criminal record and was sacked within a fortnight, at least they make a thorough check on criminal records now, even though there was a delay.
Did'nt know new recruits take the assement test on a PC now, finally technology is reaching RM
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Good luck with the interview, but if you do have to have a medical and the guy says " hello im Doctor Crozier take off your trousers and pants and bend over" tell them to stick the job where the sun dont shine...UNITY IS STRENGTH.

I deliver in stockport, the official start time on the letter I recieved was 9.45am - 14.45pm, was told by the Manager that it was 9.00am - 14.00pm but on my round there are flats which get timelocked at 10am and we have no access to the as the warden must sleep all day, so had to pressure the manager to let me start at 8am, what I do is get the Guy on the next frame (where your post is kept) to just ring my phone when it is ready for me and I go down, the earlier the better for me, today was in at 7.15am and home by 10.30am, happy days

How many people were also there for an interview? And, how are you sure I'll get it? Just wondering, still very nervous about it all.

There were only 4 people that applied when I started, and there were 2 jobs going, at the end of my interview the guy said that I had walked it and the job would be mine, unless your Stevie Wonder or allergic to paper then the chances are good for you, dont be nervous, just relazx, remember you are dealing with the public they like a stron character, those who will put a good name to the royal mail crown, gift of the gab is good but not in a cocky way, walk in there with head held high, respect the job and say you want to take pride in the job, that is what they are looking for.

Cheers everyone for the replies.

One more question. If I am offered the job, will I get my "own" walk or will I have a different one each day?

You wont get your own walk - it took me a year and that is pretty quick especially as it was a full-time walk.

However you should be led in gently by being puppy walked by a mentor, then you will be left alone for a few weeks. After that you can be put down as cover for leave/sickness etc. This sounds daunting but IMHO it is a good idea. It lets you learn the delivery area as a whole, it lets you know which are the walks to avoid and which to try to get if they come up for re pick.
