On the presumption you and collegues are on an 8-hour daily contract, why are you and your workmates taking their whole meal relief allowance way before anything like half way through your working day? You should be taking 20 minutes around four hours into your shift... Or are you all starting at 0500?
we start at 6.10, they,ve got us taking 20mins at 8.00am, has to be this way because we are due out at 9.30. i would prefer to take my full 40mins in one go, but the members voted for 20-20, the other 20mins is on the back of the shift, which is totally wrong.

meal break at the end of your shifty defeats the point of a meal break.

Any part of your meal relief at the end of your shift gives the lino's the oppertunity to load you up with even more work, knowing the majority of postmen will just rush even more to make sure they finish in enough time, and a fair few wont make it, and end up delivering in their meal relief time.

6. Where a break is scheduled before delivery, managers should ensure that this is taken prior to leaving the office.

Not taking meal breaks prior to leaving for the delivery route is clearly a major contributing factor to fatigue on delivery, the purpose of a break away from the work areas is to allow the body a period of rest and to also allow the opportunity for food and drink to be consumed to keep energy levels high.

We are still dealing with the fall-out from SDD and “Job and Knock” where meal breaks were allowed to be used for achieving an early finish. The importance of taking breaks during the shift are paramount to reducing fatigue, the Way Forward Agreement, recognised the need for breaks in line with the length of the shift via Meal Relief Harmonization, what we feel needs to be further considered is time working prior to and following the normal attendance patterns. This for example should include overtime, we are aware of cases where delivery employees have attended a full night shift in the mail-centre prior to performing their normal duty at their own delivery office.

Employees starting work before their due time also requires attention, we need to understand why people work before their due time, the question has to be asked are they attending before duty as they feel they do not have adequate time within the scheduled duty time. Not taking meal breaks is probably the major contributing factor to fatigue in general, There is a need for a massive change in attitudes from both DOM & delivery employees in regards to the taking of meal breaks prior to leaving the office, the taking of meal breaks should not be left to individual choice, if we are to seriously deal with fatigue this must be enforced.

I personally disagree, I'm fine up until hour 3 (or maybe 3 1/2) then I crash and need my break, it still leaves me 1 1/2 hours on my deliver plus travelling time :nervous
