What training did you get?

One day in the old sheffield MLO then three day's with another postman then left on my own to learn.

Best bit of training i saw was when this casual came in and announced he had crossed a picket line at a different office the day before, this old timer who had been told to throw the walk in stood there pointed to the bottom left of the walk and said " you start there " then pointed to the top right of the frame and said "you finish there" and walked off

Three days with covering duty holder (shadow day 1, joint day 2, being shadowed day 3) after the induction day, then left to effectively "wing" it, mainly as 4.5 hours a day leaves no spare capacity for proper regular training/ updates/ reminders! I've learnt a damn sight more about how to be a postman doing the job properly through this forum than I've ever been official told by managers at the depot.

LOL Training??? On day 1 i shadowed, day two Joint and day three which was a f'ing Saturday of all days i was ON MY JACK, 1.30pm deadline. I think i done well though considering i had'nt been on a bike for 30 years lol. Ive been on my own since. My bike has 1 gear ( 3rd ) no stand and brakes work if and when they want. No safety gear issued. I like the job and realy hope my contract is rolled over but i think the management could do with training to improve their communication skills as they do'nt seem to give a s**t about passing on any information to the casuals.

1991 to 1993 most of week with a JV5 indoors when I was a cadet then trained up on the three cadet delivery, plus 2 years of courses at Peterborough MLO including two outward bound courses.

when i started i got an induction day on the monday, day off tuesday, then i shadowed another postie on the same walk wednesday and thursday, then got shadowed by him on friday and i was on my own on saturday. i thought the training was fine, and it was for the duty with the most calls in the office.

the second duty i was trained on was collections. i got 2 days. shadowed a postie then got shadowed. i asked my dom why it was only two days for a more important duty(he said) and he replied, "your lucky your getting that, my boss wants to give you one day" but with a map and dots for the boxes and firms it was no problem.

i think it depends on the individual with how much training you need, i was confident enough to start my first walk the second day on my own, as with the second. but more training should definately be available if its needed, which a new start at my office a while ago showed by getting lost all the time and delivering whole streets wrong, it really should.

3 days training on a delivery walk going out with the regular postie .... back then 21 years ago the volumes of mail were a fraction of what they are nowadays and the delivery walks were smaller ... mondays, tuesdays and saturdays you could get all your mail in 1 bag and a busy day was a bag and a half ... so it was much easier working conditions for new starts
