Good luck - I started June last year, 3 F/T month contract at Maidstone, 3 month F/T contract at Sevenoaks, then I got offered a permanant contract.....P/T only & even though one screw has admitted ( off the record ) that it would be easier if I got a F/T contract, I doubt I will get one in the foreseeable future

Rai3931....Your chances of getting a full time contract (over 27hrs) are nil.

Found out today that I got the job. Some people have made the job sound a bit of a nightmare but if the job is as bad as some people say it is then why do it ? It can't be all bad. I'm going into the job with an open mind and I'm looking forward to starting bit nervous tho.

You'll be alright mate. It's a job. Nothing special, but a job anyway. Don't trust any manager and you will be fine. Most of the people you will be working with are just like you. Everyone has to be the new bloke and you're no different. When you stop being the new bloke, remember how you felt when the next new starter walks though the door and make him/her welcome. Don't be worried BFS,at 1st it's hard and you may think of jacking it in,but stick with it.
In all fairness you've joind at the wrong time, not just because of our troubles but the whole shabang has changed for the newbies.
The board is here to help and there's loads of us on here to answer ANY questions you may have,as believe me there will be a few.
Don't be scared to start topics, even if you think the question's silly. :Very Happy

Good luck mate.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

A Definition of What It's Like Being a Postman

Post by Cybitech »

To deliver the unwanted to the ungreatful, in all weathers, all day.
When we do deliver the wanted, it's to the undeserving.

Now do you still want to be a postman ??

If so, go ahead and fill out the application......

I've only been a Postie for 4 years but could I recommend the following to new starters.

1. When you start be friendly but don't join in the banter at first as you will look arrogant. Get your feet under the table first
2. Try to get on with everyone at first but once you make mates at work look after them and they'll look after you.
3. Learn to say NO if you don't the Manager will always ask you first when he wants something covering.
4. Ask questions - it does not matter how silly you think the question is if you ask it shows you are willing to listen and learn.
5. Listen to the Senior Postmen. They know all the tricks to make the job easier and they know the rules better than most managers.
6. If you don't want to work over on your duty and you think you will go over tell the manager and don't weaken when he puts pressure on you.
7. Any problems at work go and see the union.

8. Join the Union.

EVERYONE HAS A STORY OF WHY THEY ARE POSTPEOPLE :Sick . GOOD OR BAD JUST JOIN THE UNION. THEY ARE YOUR SAVING GRACE WHEN THE SH** HIT'S THE FAN.
I LIKE THE JOB BUT THE MANAGEMENT STUCTURE SOMETIMES LEAVES ME CONFUSED

I ONCE HAD AN ANSWER TO A QUESTION FROM 2 MANAGERS BOTH DIFFERENT IN THE SPACE OF 5 MINUTES.
IF YOU ENJOY IT GOOD ON YOU. I WOULD SAY IT IS ONLY A JOB NOT A CAREER. AS JOBS GO IT'S NOT THAT BAD I'VE HAD WORSE!!!!!
I USED TO RUN MY OWN BUSINESS FOR 10 YEARS
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE MAD TO DO THIS JOB BUT IT HELPS!!!!
