We have two IR reps.
They fought us for 3 years trying to amalgamate into one office as we have a shared budget....then they gave up.
We have two seperate IPS,two seperate dbf fittings...one man each in the locker, seperate vans...we are awkward buggers. :chuckle
They will come for us again i'm sure. :cuppa
There are some of theses type offices down our way.
If there are 2 or 3 post codes in one office, each post code has it's own rep.
Also each office have everything seperate just like you.

I can't see how it could work any other way.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Well i'm a rep and will be taking a duty along with our members, there should be no ring fenced duties if you are not prepared to do a duty you should not be a rep, i can see now where some offices the members say that the rep is in the managers pocket, you should be ashamed of yourselfs.

Their was a time when i might of agreed with you, but even in a small office the amout of work reps are being asked to do now is growing all the time, and it is vital they keep on top of all the new stuff thats coming out. So what is the answer yes they can stay off the ips but that time is going too get even shorter or they can crawl to the manager and get some release but that usually ends up with you trying to play catch up with your prep and if anything like me your always last out on delivery. Now its not about getting an easy duty, but about giving local reps the time to do it right, most reps are in it for the right reasons.
Many offices have NO rep and you read many horror stories on here about what happens to these offices, something must be put in place to encourage more reps to come forward and strenthen each area and the union as a whole. Their should be a Rep duty and the amount of release time built into it should depend on the size of the office (perhaps another formula from those in a higher position) and left out of any resign ,then anyone who stands for the position comes off his/her duty and takes up the rep position after all if your reps no good stand against them and vote them off.

What is so wrong may I ask those that oppose the idea of reps duties, with pre scheduled release for local reps?

It might actually encourage members to take on the reps job in a D.O without one or encourage more mbrs to stand thus generating elections.

I like that idea, when I started (20 years ago) at RM we always had a part time job set aside for Reps, personally I actually think the Rep should either have a smaller delivery/job or as Daz says, a scheduled release, the amount of time I spend at home doing CWU work and the amount of time I try and squeeze in my job and Rep work - I just can't do it in 8 hours.
As a Reps description/job has changed beyond recognition to say 10 years ago, we have to know as much if not more than DOMS now. With all this 'local' parts in the various agreements, I could spend a couple of full days a week trying to get the best deal for the office, I think the job is more frustrating now than ever.

Do you really want to encourage people to take on the responsibility of being a rep....for a cushy shift.?
Just the kind of rep you don't need.
If a rep can't stand up for himself to get the release he NEEDS well....there isn't much hope for him protecting his office is there?
Time off when required not time off all the time FFS. :cuppa

I tend to agree and the oft commented "my reps in managements back pocket" will only increase.

OTH could I ask for release to moderate this board. :hmmmm :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle

Im not talking about FULL release,so no cushy shift at all. Just a set amount of the weekly duty time to be for union work.

The amount would vary from D.O to D.O

Union work aint cushy, not by a long shot!!!!!!!!

In fact pre scheduled release allready exists in the form of WRM's.

Unfortunately your naivety shines through Daz,no dig intended....... i wish i saw life that way.
It is the type of people who would gravitate towards this set up that would be the problem, not guys like you daz...lazy,useless,workshy gob-sh*tes who talk a good game....and don't say they wouldn't be voted in by their members..that's a no-brainer.

I agree with Fishface.

Well that would be difficult for a part timer with no IPS duty surely because it would have to come out of delivery time thereby lending itself to asuggestion that the Rep had a "cushy" delivery, say closest to the office with only 400 drops..................

The amount would vary from day to day, from week to week, from DO to DO.
Like fishpaste said - if the rep can't negotiate his own release time succesfully, he's not going to be able to defend his office very well.
