Daily mail readers?! "Gay gypsy asylum seekers murdered me twice!"
As for the original matter, it should be kept as evidence and used in a B&H case against the manager.

Re: DISGRACEFUL & UNNACCEPTABLE
It's not a matter of "reacting like Daily Mail readers". The two facts that have been established, are the important ones:
1) RM were aware of the barevement, via the Fit Note.
2) The Manager turned up at someone's Home, despite this fact, and left answerphone messages. Now whether they were as bad as has been suggested or not, only effects the severity of the Manager's guilt. The fact that the Manager was chasing someone up during their grief, is still beneath contempt.
A letter, or better yet, a card, offering his/her sympathies to the Family. Along with a polite request to contact him/her, to find out first hand how they're coping, would have been an acceptable (and far more civilised) course of action. Or simply to wait until the return to work interview.

Well said and splendidly put brother andy2007.
"Today’s workplace has become heartless and soulless. Employees are seen as units of labour, automatons, functionaries, objects for achieving designated tasks, and as costs to be minimised."

Re: DISGRACEFUL & UNNACCEPTABLE
Actually, if ANYONE. Be it a friend, stranger, manager, of whoever, makes threatening phone calls, it's harassment. Which as I'm sure you're aware, can be dealt with by the Police. The Law is there, to protect people from having their lives ruined, by prolonged harassment. But it could potentially be applied in this case, if the messages were as bad as has been suggested, and the recordings were retained (for evidence). Although personally, I don't think it would be appropriate. Because it's likley to stop soon, and the law's there for protection of the victim, rather than punishment of the offender.

Re: DISGRACEFUL & UNNACCEPTABLE
From the information given by the OP some of the reaction has been way over the top, define a vile message for example.Without knowing what was said how can people come to the conclusion that it was 'unacceptable', 'contemptible' or 'disgraceful'?
Someone has said a 'vile' message has been left, and I'm not doubting the fact a message was left, but no one here knows what was said, yet some replies are borderline hysterical.
Deaths a pisser, but all the op says is it was a death in the family, not an immediate family member, and we all know rm policy on that one.
Sorry if that sounds harsh,it's not meant to,but without the full facts the thread has become a bit of a kangaroo court.

Re: DISGRACEFUL & UNNACCEPTABLE
with good Managers, most of us on here, have at one time or another had Managers behave this way. and most of us are good decent, loyal workers----who do not deserve this treatment. So, although like most folks, I am aware some 'chancers' use this board, i like to think that most tell it how it is.

Re: DISGRACEFUL & UNNACCEPTABLE
You're right about the reaction to the CONTENT of the messages. But the fact that someone was "chased up" at a time like that is contemptable in itself. I've already made my views on this plain in this thread.proper postie wrote:From the information given by the OP some of the reaction has been way over the top, define a vile message for example.Without knowing what was said how can people come to the conclusion that it was 'unacceptable', 'contemptible' or 'disgraceful'?

Now, as you quite rightly said: Unless it's an immediate Family member, RM don't give you time off. But even if Muddylab's collegue wasn't entitled to the time off. It's something which should have been dealt with on his/her return to work. NOT during his/her time of grief. That way, he/she would be better able to cope with the situation, rather than being put under pressure at a time like that.

Re: DISGRACEFUL & UNNACCEPTABLE
I was off when my dad died, sorting out the printing of the order of service when I bumped into a Lino who was out on delivery, I still think to this day he thought I was "winging it", probably because I wasn't ashen faced and wearing black.
People need time to grieve and all companies not just Royal Mail need to educate their managers to this fact.
A worker who could be mentally unstable because of this situation. And what could the consequences of a member of staff having this extra stress
I'd rather lose money and have a day off to attend a family funeral. DIGNITY & RESPECT.............Now where have i heard that before?
If I die whilst at Royal Mail, I will make sure the funeral service is after 3.00 in the afternoon so anyone could attend!
