I think geopip has explained the thinking behind saturdays very well and allayed my fears that KI branch had not grasped the political aspect to Saturday delveries ceasing and introducing a new premium service instead.

I think i have found a vacancy for geopip Political Officer @ Kent Invicta
as it appears to be vacant at present.. according to its web-site

Communication Workers?????????????????????????????????????

dv, the top brass at our branch were none too pleased that they lost the vote on recomendation!
thats why you got no explanation or any meetings have taken place.

every branch in the country should be sent a copy of that letter,it demonsrates to me how a branch should be run, for the benifit of it's members :Applause
Lead from the bottom up mucker! Wish the national union had the same responsibilities.

Take for example the BT pay rise negotiated by no less than the CWU - the newspaper claim that the CWU have rejected a 2% increase and are demanding a 5% increase and are threatening to ballot their members.

Well call me an old cynic but if I was BT I'd stick with what I had - we balloted, we went on strike, we ended up with a pay cut! :cry

My understanding from the Branch, was that those in favour of the agreement said the no voters should give other alternatives and that’s why they wanted to show another way of thinking.

Of course I think they know it would have need Parliament to agree the change however it would need first for both the Union, Royal Mail and the Regulator to be pushing for the change to the Universal Service. Every Sat off verses 1in 4 I know what I want

There would be job losses with this idea but no more than the current RM plans to shed thousands of them over the next 3 years. There is no real desire by the public for sat deliveries and those who want them would have to pay for the premium service.

I don’t think they felt it was the only way of thinking but we need to think outside the box to deliver something different.
With respect, the public are recipients of mail. They don't pay the postage, the customer does. The customer - in Crozier's world - is the sender of the item, not the recipient. Those customers want Saturday deliveries because research shows people are more likely to read unsolicited / unadressed items at the weekend, when they've got time off - unlike the poor postie, who will have less free-time at weekends if this deal goes through.

Well done Kent Invicta, though. Not just recommending a NO vote, but putting across some very powerful arguments as to why as well :Applause

They've also got a sense of humour. Check this out:
Full time working:- We welcome the fact that
the agreement highlights that the industry will
primarily be full time working, in as much as a
figure of 75 % - 25% split in full time / part time
jobs has been agreed, however no details are in
the agreement on how or when this will be
achieved, is it immediately the agreements
signed or at the end of the three years or when
dinosaurs rule the Earth again.

Only 1 problem I see with this, Mon to Fri working, what happens to the covermans job, if all the posties he/she covers are working what does he/she do, I can't see RM paying them a retainer to sit at home waiting for somebody to go sick or be on holiday, and I'm damn sure he/she won't be happy having to work every saturday

Its at the end of the three years, Big Dave says that on the DVD.

Big Dave says a lot of things, did he say how we achieve it or how we monitor it, is it Unit by Unit or is it a National figure? Most Mail Centres have to operate on a 60% fulltime and 40% part time, therefore we will never get 75-25 split in them, therefore we have to believe RM will increase the current split in delivery offices above the 75-25 to achieve the National figure, something I think we will have trouble in getting them to do and will find even harder to monitor. The agreement again carries no real detail on this issue.
