Possible problem with backpacks
For those of you who don't know: I'm not on Deliveries myself. But wouldn't backpacks be a problem for Deliveries?
You'd have to keep taking it off, and putting it back on, all the time. Wouldn't that cause even more problems for your back than the current ones?

can i use my own bag?
the security of the bags are bad no zips. buckles allways snap etc. the material is crap .
we are told to drap it over our shoulder - this isnt allways possible and is awkwurd.
these bags are designed for woman.
i want a mans - back pack - that i can walk properly with instead of swaying about
Just curious. Why are the bags 'designed for woman?'
Why would a backpack help?

womans bag

mans bag

Backpack Basics
Backpacks can't be beat for helping you to stay organized. Multiple compartments keep all your supplies and notes close at hand. Backpacks also have health benefits. Compared with shoulder bags or purses, backpacks are better for carrying all those books and supplies because the weight of the pack is evenly distributed across your body and is supported by the strongest muscles in the body: the back and the abdominal muscles. But backpacks that are overloaded or used improperly can make for some heavy health problems.
If you wear your womanly royal mail bag over just one shoulder, or carry your books in a messenger bag, you may end up leaning to one side to offset the extra weight. You might develop lower and upper back pain and strain your shoulders and neck. Improper backpack use can lead to poor posture.

Re: rm bags are anoying !!!!!
When I used to be on a 100% walking/carrying duty, I used to thread my belt through those two loops on the back of the pouch.
It took some of the weight off my shoulder and also helped prevent the pouch swinging round and hitting me in the face whilst bending down to low letterboxes.
Didn't do anything to stop mail getting wet and the pouch smelling like cat pee when it rained though. Nothing does that.
Btw, Now I'm on a bike duty, the bike takes all the weight. I'm going to miss the bikes when they go.

Just spilt stain-remover down my shirt. Now how do I get that out?

And how does using a backpack solve having to swing your bag over your head anyway? I would have thought that the very reason we don't use backpacks is because you'd have to take them off every time you want something our of your bag ...no?

Re: rm bags are anoying !!!!!
I know you arn't overly fond of this car salesman but I'll share a story with you about bags that still sends shivers down my spine whenever I reminiss.
Back in 2005, I was riding the bike along the main road in my home town laden with 3 bags as my driver was a twot and would rather have me wait an hour rather than go 2 mins out of his way.One bag on the front of the bike and one over each shoulder. Had my walkman on, riding quite happily along (I'm sure health and saftey would have had a field day...before you lot start) anyway, a lorry went past me and the bag over my right shoulder got caught on the back of it whilst it went past...
I was zooming along at about 30 mph stuck to the bloody thing, desperatly tring to keep my balance whist getting the bag off my shouders..
The lorry driver completely oblivious to my pilght then decides to overtake a stopped vehicle. Staring death in the face I just let go of everything and ended up on the road landing on the bag which was over my left shoulder, with my bike smacking into the parked car with bag 2 and bag 3 attached to lorry spewing post all the way down the street.....
letter, postie, bike and bags all over the joint!!
Not one of my best days.

I actually like my RM bag, it is quite comfortable to carry, and is about the right size for what I need. I agree that it should be waterproof, but that is about the only problem I have had so far.
If you ever get hold of a new pouch it comes with a thick yellow plastic bag which has Royal mail written on it. This is the liner for the bag when it's raining and will keep the mail dry. Most posties at my office throw them away when they get a new pouchThorby Bislam wrote:Didn't do anything to stop mail getting wet and the pouch smelling like cat pee when it rained though. Also hang your bags up on your frame if they are wet so they dry out, stops them stinking. I hang mine by their straps on the overhead light, bone dry the following morning.
