We wern't thinking about bikes at the time.
Some of us unfortunately broke through the defences and we are still here.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Maybe not,What if you get two half-wits who come in early, don't take breaks and run around like blue a**ed fleas and they get to take the van home too. :hmmmm

Benefits to Royal Mail.

No conveyance drivers. No driving allowances.

Three and a half hour delivery span extended to 4 hours plus. You are not carrying bags so you can walk for longer. Toilet breaks. Drive back to the office.

Later starts. Nine to five do the collections as part of the duty. Collection duties gone.

Whatever happens I know which side will benefit the most.

Or one half-wit t*sser who starts pressurising his colleague into going faster to keep up with him. :hmmmm :hmmmm

Ill team up with morgan and his organ, similar work speed and and deliveries on the same estate.

However we are far more likley to end up with proposals to make our deliveries HCT.

All will be revealed in September when RML start their delivery methods revision at our D.O

This what i dont understand why have RML not issued you with bikes, especially when D.O's like mine have too many.
Because a bike isn't a two wheeled trolley and mail should never be left unattended on a cycle. I have seen people use them by pushing them along a street a few yards at a time and deliver a few letters - that's not the intention of a cycle.

Unless we go into flats then the mail pouch stays in the front tray.

The info we get from the DOM and the Delivery manager is to keep the mail in sight and dont go too far away.

Problem No 1. A van off the road, for a smaller office, every 9 days for repair and maintenance.

Double and treble that for larger offices, so a really large office can expect a van off the road every 3 days.

And vans break down, all the time, these vans will ALL need replacing in 2-3 years, thats a whole new fleet of vans for EVERY office.

Wheres the money coming from for that?

Or one normal speed postie and a useless tosser who walks at 1mph and stops for a fag every 2 minutes.

There are plenty of issues, but personally if they can be gotten around I like the idea. My current walk has no toilet stops at all, so the back of a van would be handy. Also if you get someone you like working with you it will make the job a bit more bearable on a very heavy/wet day.

We've been told we'll all be going out at the same time and finishing at the same time - how's that going to work then, considering the difference in finish time between the fastest and slowest in my office is currently at least 3 hours, probably more. If it's 'we want everyone working to their time' then managers are going to have to deal with a serious amount of mail coming back.

It could be a good thing but only if we make it so.
RM will try and use it to their advantage and underestimate our work loads.2 walks wont be able to be done in the same time as 2 people doing 1 each.I hope they know this?
As long as people are going to split the workload fairly and be strong with regards cutting off it can't make the job any harder.

Comments on the usefulness of a van during cold weather does not hold any benefit for me. I think that the job is easier during the winter months as it is easy to get warm if you are cold, and tiredness does not kick in so much as it does during the height of the Summer when it is baking hot. A van which no doubt will have no air-con will provide no refuge at all in hot weather. The best thing for cooling you down is a bicycle, as you can catch what breeze is about and the cycle takes the wear and tear away from walking. I am dreading the possible removal of cycles as walking for 4 or 5 hours either carrying a bag or pulling a trolley will be no walk in the park. Whats going to happen when there is a run on the petrol pumps and we cant get fuel. What contingency plans have they got for that. None I would think. This whole system is doomed to failure. If you look at TBTs comments, he has made many good points on the negative side, but the only points on the positive side is being able to carry more equipment around for bad weather and somewhere to have a break.

We have been doing park and loop in our office for 10 months if done right it does benefit you maximum stairs in back = 6 we started doing it but it does take longer on the street. Dont think any one does it anymore, and yes vans do go home with you (select few take them) :Boo hoo!
