Re: question in confidencew
Does happen in my office, but rember you are the one holding the cards,if another duty is available in the office ,one that you know and is easier than the one you are meant to do go for the easier one.If not a easier one do your duty,In our office some of theCover guys have a good relationship with the duty holders and normaly we work things out ourselvels
then tell the Managers whats going to happen,as long as all the rounds are covered and they get no grief theey are fine.
But also rember as a cover man the rounds you cover can change for what ever reason so you have to be a bit flexibile.

confidencew ?
I cover days off. If the duty holder is at work, he's not off is he? So I don't cover him...I just do whichever walk I'm told to do. I do five walks, so when I go in I know I'm doing one of those five walks, sometimes I get a nice surprise, and I'm doing one I prefer, rather than the one I hate, sometimes not. Generally, I know which walk I'll be doing each day, so it's not too bad.

Totally disagree with this.
If you wish to stay on your duty and do not want to be screwed around you cannot pick and choose when you apply this rule and when you don't.

That may suit you but is not how a rotation should function.A rotator does not cover the duty holder he covers the duty. They are not reserves and choose the rotation they are on.I think most of them would prefer to be left on the duty they are supposed to cover

Puppet and newpostie, you may be thinking about 'reserves' which is a pot luck duty most times.
We are talking about 'rest day covers (RDC)' which is a different job all together.
RDC's cover 5 duties who have their days off. That is their duty, and no way should they be bumped off for some scrotum who wants to work his/her rest day.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

OK, but never heard of RDC's, I don't think we have any, probably for the reason being discussed here. If we are short staffed, and a couple of people are needed one day and are asked to work their day off, a lot can only do their own duty. They'll come in and free up the reserve to go where needed.POSTMAN wrote:Puppet and newpostie, you may be thinking about 'reserves' which is a pot luck duty most times.

Maybe I'm missing the point, I just can't see why duty holders shouldn't be on their own duty when they work their day off.

You DO have rest day covers (RDC's) unless you work 6 days a week which i'm sure your office doesn't.NewPostieUK wrote:OK, but never heard of RDC's, I don't think we have any, probably for the reason being discussed here. And i'm afraid yes,you are missing the point, but don't take that personally.

In our office we have no regular floaters or RDC or whatever you want to call them.POSTMAN wrote: You DO have rest day covers (RDC's) unless you work 6 days a week which i'm sure your office doesn't.

A rest day cover, covers 5 different duties when the duty holders have their day off.
We have lots of reserves or dogsbodies or whatever you want to call them.
This obviously helps the managers cover duties. And it explains why we haven't had a resign in years.

Re: question in confidencew
Thats exactly what i do. However, if someone is off sick for example, I might be asked to cover that duty, and the other duty holders will be asked to work their day off. This seems logical to me. The other duty holders probably can't do the sick duty, and why would they want to if they have their own duty?POSTMAN wrote: A rest day cover, covers 5 different duties when the duty holders have their day off.

Newpostie If that suits you then fine but it doesn't suit everyone.
"and why would they want to if they have their own duty?"
The point is they do not have there own duty....on their day off...YOU are the dutyholder that day....so THEY should be reserve.
