I posted a special during my first month in the job and when I reported it was told no problems as I new exactly were it was nothing was ever said again. However we had a long serving postie in our office sacked earlier this year for doing just that as well.

I personally would not worry about it as contrary to RM's beliefs we are only human and we make mistakes.

As some others have said try and keep Specials separate and it is a good idea to have cards etc in bundles to remind you for recorded etc. I have coloured envelops that I put in my bundles if I have a special/recorded or even a packet in my bag for, as I have a memory like a sieve and am constantly walking back up the street when I remember.

Will in all liklehood be fine, the main thing is you put it through the correct door. The rest is just administrative really.

As an addition to this post, does anybody else think that signatures on those pda's are a complete waste of time. They identify nothing. The amount of people that just scribble some junk on it. How could it ever identify anybody? When there are old frail people and you have to self sign it for them... what does it all mean, why do we bother?

What signatures everyone just squiggles that's why we have to confirm a name so it can be used as proof. I'm all for the PDA' just wish they were smaller and more reliable as 4 out of 5 days the paper slips are soggy so no good.

On a normal residential you only get one or two specials per day usually, so I just put them in the front pocket of the pouch and remember where they are on the walk. All other packets I write a 'P' on one of the letters for that house so I know there's a packet for it.

And no, I don't give a monkeys if you're not supposed to write on them - in 12 years nobody has complained It's quick, efficient and saves messing around putting stuff in the bundles. I'll only write a 739 out first if it's raining, then I do them before I go out.

When I tried that I had a senior moment and forgot why I turned it round - had to go back when I finished the bundle and bag

I use the pre-written card method for packets that wont go through the LB and "P" for those that will. I also write "C" for Catalogues and "F" for DNBs and if someone else is doing part of my duty I use "DL" to alert them to a Dog issue (it saves them trying to remember all of them when they have read the cards).

The threads a bit confusing,is it actually a recorded or a special delivery?
In our office walkmen no longer carry specials,as they all need scanning with the
new PDA's.
If it's a recorded and your satisfied you've definitely delivered it to the correct
address,you could always sign for it yourself,just make sure you tell the PHG
what's happened,but don't make a habit of it.

I wouldn't be signing for specials myself for any reason at the moment. Managers are just looking for any excuse to get rid of staff. Wouldn't put it past them deliberately setting up something like this to be honest.

I put a door to door or p739 where I have a packet, not a special or recorded. Both of these items should be separated from normal mail.

Always keep them away from normal mail.

You sorted your specials in with your regiular mail? Not good...

Turning a letter back to front or scribbling a S on the back is a good reminder the address has a special. Eats up a bit more sorting time too!

I put recordeds into the frame at the end of my prep but the specials are kept seperate and then put into the bag when they're needed but I suppose it depends on the way you've been trained (I never write out a P739 until I'm standing at the door because that's the way I was trained).

BTW what about the BT specials that didn't require a signature, are they still going?

You should keep all specials (letters + packets) in the front pouch of the bag you take out with you, they should be with you at all times.

I've heard you have to do this, in fact I nearly always do do it. But what if there's 3 or 4? They won't fit. Also, You've carefully weighed your bags, when you transfer second bag, you'll be over weight if you have specials in your pouch. If you've got a shoebox, or even half a shoebox sized special, in the middle or near the end of your walk, it's mad having to cart it around with you. Not to mention packets from when you've P739'd people. I think they forget not everyone has a van.

Ive done that before years ago, just went back to the office and confessed, all the line manager said was knock tom (no answer). I was told that on the scan thing they do they can put it down as delivered without signature which I thought was odd at the time as thats the whole point of special delivery. Never went any further.

done the same myself years back.went back to the door and luckily the owner was out of the shower and signed my card. Also once gave a special to the wrong customer(next door,same surname).she opened it before realising it wasnt for her.Luckily the person it was for was alright about it.

Whilst doing my driving duty were I would have anything from 20 upto 150 specials the main problem I used to have when using the paper cards was going to a house getting no reply but forgetting to right S/L etc. on the signature place I would then goto the next house and end up getting them to sign for the barcode from the last item! I'd normally figure out what had happened and sort the whole mess out but it got a bit worse when i'd get someone to sign on the sheet and then while driving off realise i'd not taken the bar code off the item therefore making myself look a right idiot knocking again 2 minutes later, on a couple of occasions they wouldn't answer so I had to sort it out at the office - never needed to involve a manager becuase the RLE staff could always sort it out and see which code was missing when confirming the items. Thats why I think the PDAs are great you don't make these mistakes anymore and now I'm walking I don't care about Specials becuase the person doing my old duty takes them all out for us walking men. I always use the written p on letter for parcels and just slot recorded letters at the front a houses mail - you can't really miss the orange sticker!

If you can't safely and securely carry all your Specials in your pouch then go and see your manager, the driver should take whatever you can't fit in. You shouldn't even be taking shoebox sized packets never mind specials - especially with the new smaller pouches that have been brought in over the last couple of years, you use dto be able to get 4 bundles and quite a few packets in, now there's no chance.
