what electrical items are at an office? scales..sorting machine. conveyor belts. erm flooresant lights. ring bell. telephone. computer. extractors. alarms. ventalater. plasma telly. kettle for break.. canteen coke machine.. cooker. light switches.
just like any other industry, equipment is checked periodically (meaning annually). i'm sure HSE were doing the safety checks. all industries have to pass these or they don't get a safety certificate. and if they don't get it, they don't work.
if someone uses any equipment knowingly to be faulty/dangerous, the employer is liable for the consequence. if someone uses their own equipment on-site, both parties are liable. (sub contractors have their own inspections and have to provide liability certificates).
an old hoover probably could blow out cos of modern 10mm electrical circuits, best to be safe.
i suppose two envelopes could be used to sweep up. hold in left hand slightly bent in the middle and scoop it onto the left hand envelope with a swift right hand movement with the other lol.. dark ages.

Sorry, but none of the above is relevant, as it's a "portable appliance" under discussion not fixed installations.
Portable appliances shouldn't even be in RM premises if they've not been Romec PAT (no, nothing to do with Postman Pat, Axeman
Nothing to do with HSE checks either, as these PAT tests and checks are run under IEE guidance and regs.

Re: Royal Mail Hoover
A manageress got the sack from a local charity shop , apparently what she'd been doing to get round the law , was to " give away " electrical items but strongly recommended a donation .
None of the items had been checked by an electrician for safety , apparently a lot of electrical items that were spot checked over on the nearby bootsale would have put unwary purchasers into orbit .
She took the charity shop to Tribunal but the dismissal was ruled as fair AFAIK .

Tman..in other words then, a detachable and transportable apparatus that is used as part of an operatives tasks cannot be achieved cos the mail office is prohibited of the usage of such transportable and detachable apparatus, and leaves a worker in schtuck

Don't know what you're trying to say there, but there shouldn't be any portable appliances in any RM premises which haven't got a current/valid PAT test tag.

Are you saying that you currently use portable electrical equipment, which doesn't have a current test sticker?johnsouthwales wrote:Tman..in other words then, a detachable and transportable apparatus that is used as part of an operatives tasks cannot be achieved cos the mail office is prohibited of the usage of such transportable and detachable apparatus, and leaves a worker in schtuck
If so: Get it checked fast! These checks are done for a reason!
If getting the equipment properly checked, is going to interfere with your job. Get your Manager to aquire a replacement, so that you can carry on. We have everything, right down to extension leads, checked. Although, obviously, there are exceptions. Specifically: Anything which is subject to a different type of test. So that includes Electric FLTs, Scuds, etc.. Permanently installed equipment, such as Dock Levelers. There are others. But it would probably get a bit silly, giving an exhaustive list (even if I could). But I'm sure you get the idea.

LoL i'm staying out of this..shan't say anymore.
if cleaning up is part of duties, then the correct aparatus is used.. and if it means using a hoover and the hoover is not passed, then the duty cannot be carried out.

No, please do.
I'm sorry I came on a bit strong there. But I'm genuinely shocked that, that type of situation is still occuring. If people like you, don't tell people what's going on, then we can't help you protect yourself. Electrical appliances can be extremely dangerous, if they aren't maintained properly. And portable electrical appliances (including Hovers) are particularly suceptable in a work environment. Because they are carried around, and not neccessarily looked after properly.
It doesn't take long, to carry out the neccessary checks. Although unless you have a qualified electrician on site, it can be expensive getting one to come out. But what's more important: Safety or money?
Besides: Surely you have Cleaners on site don't you?
Just ask one of them, if you can borrow a Hoover. Theirs, will be properly maintained.

No, we don't have one. There's one who comes in to check the equipment when it's due. But surely RM must have some somewhere. Or are they Contractors?

Re: Royal Mail Hoover
lol. don't ask an onsite cleaner for a borrow of their equipment - they'd think you're taking their job.
