The royal mail indemnity certificate only covers 3rd party damage. It does not cover any damage to the postmans private vehicle even if caused during a snatch of postal items. There is also the question of "security of mail" which will be raised if posties use their own cars as mobile pouch drops, even if kept out of sight. The letters and packets etc are covered though.

i can almost guaruntee you that your insurance company does not cover you, i do not know any insurance company which allows you to carry mail in your car, you MAY have taken out BUSINESS USE, which will state on policy that the vehicle is only allowed to be used for social, domestic, commuting and business use, this in fact does not cover carrying mail, as there usually is an exclusion i the small print about the vehicle being used to carry mail or be used for multi drops (and i have to say i have never seen a policy which does not included that exclusion in some form or other) RoyalMail do hold their own policy and that MAY cover you, but i would really advise you to get a copy of that policy to find out what you are covered for i.e excesses/third party liability
When I asked my insurance company at the time they said it would be alright and it would be classed as business use, and my gaffa has never said anything back to me after taking copies, but I believe you when you say it does'nt cover me carrying mail so with that being said from now on starting tomorrow lol I'm only gonna take my first bag out with me in the car obviously all the rest can be put out to the driver. Better to be safe then sorry eh :cool

I found this out to my own cost quite a few years back.
I used to use my car on delivery and in those days it was just to make time as i had a second afternoon job. The clutch / flywheel had failed on my car so i was using my girlfriends whilst it was being fixed and that was the week the car was broken into whilst on delivery. They went in through the cars interior to get the mail in the boot (as they could not force it open) and simply wrecked the seats and trim in the process. They smashed two windows and mashed the locks as well. It ended up costing me about a months salary and many trips to salvage yards to fix it and a lot more to fix the situ with the girlfriend. :d'oh!
I also had to attend a hearing concering the lost mail, and got a warning as i was using the car around the delivery. After that i never used my car again (its a mugs game :no no ) just a bike, later a trolley, and now a tin lid (van).
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Surprisingly it was a delivery in a really nice area. I was followed and tailgated from the delivery office by a blue transit van, i just thought it was a pratt with the hump going to work. I lost track of it well before i parked up on the walk and moved the car once. A customer spotted it backed up close to my (girlfriends) car just before they attacked it. Turns out they were a bunch of hardened thugs that had come down from the Liverpool area. They caught them about 3 months later and i had to submit a statement about the van. The police said it was better for me to have been away from the car as they would not have cared about banging me on the head to get to the mail. Not good.
