The changes Simon claims to need and the changes that would actually help advance the business are poles apart imo. He drones on about other delivery companies doing this and that but who really wants a parcel getting delivered at 10pm on a Sunday night. Royal Mail need to play to their strengths and not just try to copy other delivery companies. No point comparing us to Amazon when that is not a delivery company, it's just grown so big that they can deliver some of their own parcels now.
Instead of starting later we could corner the early delivery side of the market. Get things to people earlier in the day. If they have ordered something late the night before then tough, they might have to wait for it to be sent LAT or the day after.
Cut back on all the s**t mail. Charge a premium for the crappy 'to the occupier' stuff and charge up for door to doors. Surely all this gets in the way of delivering the more profitable parcels and is something the competitors don't bother with.
Unsure if possible but do away with second class stamps and just have one stamp on offer at about £1 a piece 1-2 days delivery time.
Sunday working would probably have to come in just for parcels but this should be at an incentivised rate and not just as part of your normal working pattern.

hi all, i have no problem with foreign workers trying to eke out a living and work hard in this country delivering consumer greed parcels, indeed i think its to their credit. lets not forget, had most of us not stopped going abroad for holidays once or twice a year, they would probably be in their home country working in hospitality and maybe your favourite nice waiter or pool lifeguard. the real problem is the exploitation of human resources by the very wealthy, furthering their vulgar wealth desires. me opg 15 years in, and a couple of years ago i saw rival companies as a threat to our jobs, the biggest threat to our jobs is the copany we work for who could'nt run a bath. now i see we are all victims of the same greedy bastards. stand tall brothers, sh***s going to hit the fan.

I'm on the side of playing to what we have.

Early deliveries, secure deliveries, flat rates. We're going everywhere anyway.

I can only imagine how long it will be until they try to do "same day" national deliveries to try and beat amazon. (Who only offer it for select items near their warehouses). We'll end up time travelling to deliver tomorrows parcels yesterday. What is wrong with a 1300 cutoff for buying next day stuff?

That would lose us loads of customers (medium-large/very large firms), potentially to the point where RM would be looking at making all walks longer

We've got a lot of Rural Duties in my Office. You'll often find that any Amazon Prime Parcels are given to us to deliver, because their own drivers can't/won't get there on time. They'll also dump any "Deep Rural" Parcels on us because they don't want their drivers wasting time driving off into the sticks.

Good Business Practice probably but RM should be charging them a Premium rate for these Parcels or .... "Deliver them your Bloody Self"! :cuppa

I agree, and we are not the only ones. When start times got pushed back an hour in 2007, our DOM expressed his opinion in WTLL that surrendering early delivery was a mistake. Had we never moved delivery into the middle of the day we might not be facing delivery at the end of the day.

The customer is king. If they say cut all the trees down on Easter Island then who are we to refuse?
The machine stops.

More likely getting rid of a tonne of MC staff :thumbup

Do you honestly think that if RM lost a load of big customers that they wouldn't be wanting to find savings wherever they can, even it it meant taking hours out of DOs? If DOs suddenly lost loads of parcel traffic, then that's less time spent knocking on doors, so they're bound to want to add work to walks

but so far in my do ive asked if we keep reducing walks then at some point we are going to need less people and he has said no we will be keeping the same number of staff.so either im daft or this is pissing in the wind you cant keep removing duties and still need the same number of people.

I did 12.5 miles yesterday on a not particularly heavy day. How much further can i be walking 5 days a week? Not to mention the insane number of flights of stairs.

Increasing delivery length/span doesn’t necessarily result in increased productivity.

If i do 12 miles in 4 hours for example, can i thus do 15 miles in 5 hours? Or 18 miles in 6?

Suppose the only way it would make sense is if you haven't got the right amount of staff in the first place.

Well like most places we run with less than we need but will this stop lapsing? I doubt it very much.

Don't think RM care about the distance travelled, only the time taken

We have enough staff on lates to deliver late arrivals it just needs organising something the RM are not good at. All this people want next day delivery is a smoke screen most people are happy with our service they use other carriers because they are cheaper.
