Could be the result of "Delivery to Spec" where the items have been held for the maximum of 5 days and have then gone out. Might be where the local MC have got shortages of mech staff on their late shift so the night shift might be running the DSA

Reduced letter machine capacity in the Mail Centres is mainly to blame. Loads of machines have been removed to make way for the parcel machines. To hit wave 1 all DSA letters have to be processed and batched by 22:00. This rarely happens now.

Considering the two waves of un-sequenced mech received today I'm wondering what the point is of having CSS machine operators at all

This is RM.
This is what they are good at - throwing money at the wrong things at the wrong time.
We had CSS machines in our DO for a couple of years before they decided to mothball them and pay off all the operators.

One day I might tell you about the South Coast moped fiasco.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Has to be done by about 21:00 for us otherwise we'd end up sending the last batch or two as manual

Sounds like capacity issues either the MC is very short on mech staff or they've had problems with the machines
