The opportunity to take voluntary redundancy for a substantial number of managers who are ready to leave the business – an offer which has been over subscribed

Re: Managers strikes!
CMA Rep
Over the past year or so, Managers have been asked to foster a Trust culture within Royal Mail.
This has been done on the backdrop of working in the most taxing and unprecedented circumstances, in the midst of a worldwide Pandemic. Despite all of this, our hard-working Managers have shown determination to keep the operation running , even in the prevailing, challenging and extenuating circumstances. You have managed record parcel volumes delivering essential supplies and organised collections from our 35,000 priority postboxes which has been the lifeline for the UKHSA for test kits returning back to labs.
During this same period our Managerial diligence and resilience has been repaid with 2 separate Managerial culls:
RM2020 – circa 1650 Managerial job losses.
Delivering for the Future – circa 930 Managerial job losses. The board appear to be wedded to a short term £40 million cash saving that will cost more long term in reduced productivity and Quality of Service.
TOTAL – circa 2500 Managerial job losses in just over a year.
Last year we were told it was the year of the DOM, but a little over 6 months later we were told that all DOMs and DLM roles were no longer, and the Business wanted to introduce a COM role. This meant that all of the aforementioned roles were discarded with and Managers affected would either have to accept VR or face the prospect of an assessment to see if they would be considered for the new COM role. The COM role in essence has altered very slightly, if at all from the DOM role.
6 months into the financial year of 2021-22 RM decided that they were going to introduce 6 new Vital Few measures. These measures were imposed on our Managers and no discussions were undertaken on the changes or the original targetry which had been set.
During Christmas 2021, our Managers were asked to use their own credit cards to pay for hire vehicles. RM had apparently badly got their sums all wrong. As always, our Managers stepped up. How were they repaid a matter of weeks later when it was crystal clear that the plan had already been drawn up?
RM are extremely keen to Performance Manage our Managers but when are RM going provide manager’s with the proper Tools for the Job to allow this to happen?
They started PIP with the promise to help, support, develop and train managers. Then used the PIP list against them by getting individuals in rooms and offering them protected conversation. (Totally unacceptable.)
The rhetoric from RM has been very clear on the new COM roles – “smaller is better.” Yet we have now discovered that at least 699 COM roles will be asked to manage 36+ staff. More than a third of the roles. What makes it even more laughable is that RM have completely disregarded both RDCs and Reserves in this calculation. This is completely and utterly unacceptable and shows a complete disregard for the TM1 – National document. A number of COM roles will be expected to Manage 50+ staff on a weekly basis. Smaller is better. Hmm………?
700 experienced managers are now preparing to leave the company on redundancy, the same managers who showed tremendous fortitude and resilience in the face of adversity.
Their recognition is job cuts and an attack on shift allowances.

We have put in detailed counter proposals to RMG.
Economist believe flat managerial structures at front line do not work.
Royal Mail has operated a hierarchal structure for over 500 years that has been successful. You can not change structures overnight and reduce 100 s of delivery managers.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

OPG
Although not currently a DOM I did have that dubious privilege for about 7 years during the 2010s. I took the generous offer of going back to being a postie (best decision ever) well in reality my DSM said I don't think you're up to this Duncan I'll be looking to manage you out of the business next year!
The core of the issue from my experience is far too many of the DOMs and line managers have spent the last 10 years nodding. Yes boss we can definitely lapse more. Yes boss I can get that delivery covered (puts on trainers-gets home at
Yes boss we can do Sunday deliveries and collections.
We all used to whisper after the conference calls were over that can't be done but none of us and I include myself in this ever actually said to our boss what your asking of the postman is not achievable! Now you've all hidden the truth for so many years now it's all a bit too late to say actually Simon we can't do that.
I would love to think that you can rely on the support of 100,000 posties in your dispute but that would also be a lie. So for now I wish you all well and i hope those that want to go, get to go and those that want to stay get to work in an office were everyone works at 100 bsi and never goes sick and can work 7 days a week 7-7.

They can’t believe their luck. Queuing out the door for VR. Definitely going to be a big restructuring in deliveries in the near future. Unfortunately we won’t get the chance of going with a pay off

So if all the managers are out at the gate who will tell me to only take the Tracked packets? Hey, maybe that means proper service might be restored if only for the duration of their strike.
The machine stops.

Re: Managers strikes!
Good post. Very true re: the conference calls. Managers sitting listening shaking their heads at what is being asked of them then meekly agreeing to the latest squeeze. The year on year budget cut noose being tightened, whilst none of the unit managers would put up any public protest. This is the reality right now: Delivery rounds are going out on lapsing as a priority over a posties regular round. Take your lapsing, do that first and bring back the excess from your own round if you can't manage. The overtime has dried up cos Simon said we are clawing back that 300 million the pandemic cost us in sick leave. Come 5pm the units have a load of bags of mail returned and undelivered just so the DOM could say the floor was clear at 11 am. Missorts which are left in are trayed up and hidden, never shown on the daily report. Sick levels high? Forget it, you're lapsing. Traffic 30% above forecast?, forget it, you're lapsing. 6 or 7 Door to doors? Forget it, you're lapsing.POSTMAN wrote: ↑30 Mar 2022, 21:05OPG

None of the DOM's had the guts to put their hands up and say this isn't right, and it's done them no good at all.
For years we all went on strike and the managers sneered at us, maybe they'll now realise that those efforts to seek change affected everyone, including them.
In reality, they won't strike, they'll nod away... and accept what's coming without a fuss.

Re: Managers strikes!
No way do these work shy parasites have the balls to strike.
Why bother spending on redundancy. Just fire them over discrepancies, fraudulent figures, underperformance, wilful delay, lost business contracts….what goes around comes around.

The upper bosses have always been reluctant to fire their managers for those reasons because they have been totally complicit in those practices

Re: Managers strikes!
When you develop such a confrontational style of management, by it's nature it's an "Us and Them" situation.
Royal Mail is being scrupulosy fair by shitting on both Management (Unite) & Staff (CWU). As Trade Unionists I suppose we should recognise that Royal Mail are attempting to attack everyone's T & Cs.
However due to that "Us and Them" situation neither side is likely to support the other, and I believe it would naive to assume they would.
Imagine how effective this Company could be IF we were all on the same side, and pulling in the same direction? It wasn't considered when we were Public Sector and I certainly don't think it's going to be considered now we're a Private Company. Unless of course someone can spin it to Simple Simon that it would make more MONEY!

As Trade Unionists we should remember that the CMA is not a union, does not promote union values and has actively tried to undermine legal industrial action by our union and others. As Trade Unionists I suppose we should recognise that Royal Mail are attempting to attack everyone's T & Cs.
The fact that they have bought some union badges from Unite for cold hard cash only makes their position even more morally untenable.
My solidarity is not for sale comrade.

Of course they don't take lunch breaks. They're never in that longA survey of Unite members has revealed that the current service is built on unpaid work by the postal managers and so it can ill-afford to lose 1,000 from the workforce. Members regularly go without lunch breaks, work unpaid at weekends and even forego annual leave to provide the public with a service.

Looks like in our depot the most amicable, reasonable and thusfore popular and successful manager is getting the chop, and the guy who has had 3 people cite him as their reason for leaving in the last 6 months (as well as having at least 8 posties who have to be moved if he's in their section) is now strutting about like billy big balls in the belief he'll be given more power
