Are people with degrees or other such qualifications any different to the rest? Really!! Please don't patronise us, we all do the same work.

Probably a lot of that would have been back when DSA didn't exist and MS3 got held over to MondaysEdward Hunter wrote: ↑22 Jan 2022, 22:21As ive got older this job has got many times harder! Re: Over and out -Whats the opinions on the workload?
I remember those times. Overtime was paid by the length of a stack of mail on the sorting frame, it was completable, you often could finish early, no large heavy packets to slow you down, no collections, no scanning of anything, door to doors were effectively optional, as you could always get someone else to do it if you wanted, pension was good and actually worth so much the company did not need to pay in for some years. Despite all this and more, the company always made plenty of cash. (which went to the government that helped the whole country instead of a few stockholders) Its a bit like the story of how if you put a frog into boiling water it will leap out immediately, but put it into cold water and raise the temperature it will happily boil to death.Edward Hunter wrote: ↑22 Jan 2022, 22:21As ive got older this job has got many times harder! That 'pension holiday' actually went on for far too long as was one of the main reasons we have the current pension mess!
The company were also making a £1 million per day loss at one point.

Re: Over and out -Whats the opinions on the workload?
Royal Mail lost its dominance of the market when their monopoly finished and the market was opened up to competition. As with most things government, it was done very badly and unfairly in that RM is the only regulated courier which is disgraceful when you consider that a parcel is a parcel, whoever delivers it.
This also resulted in the union losing a lot of its clout as it meant that if we went on strike the customers now had an alternative instead of their mail just piling up, and as we all know the union have to play their cards carefully now when dealing with disputes as their trump card has been all but lost.

I don't believe the company has ever lost a million pounds a day. This was a case of creative accounting in order to create the narrative that the mail had to be privatised to survive. At the time RM and the CWU in dispute over the potential privatisation, wages and T&C's. The accounts frontloaded the cost of investment in modernization of the sorting machines and the failed flat sorting along with upgrading much of the fleet. This then appeared to show a loss but that was taking future spending and comparing with the then current income. The spending was over estimated to give this false narrative and the spending was spread over several trading years. Creating the perfect headline for the Mail, Express, Sun and telegraph.RobertT wrote: ↑25 Jan 2022, 04:46That 'pension holiday' actually went on for far too long as was one of the main reasons we have the current pension mess!

The bottom line is that one of the greatest robbery of taxpayers money took place with millions spent on modernization of equipment and real estate just a few years before Cameron and Vince Cable sold RM at a massively reduced rate to their mates and banks.
Johnson and the current crime syndicate have taken fleecing the taxpayer to a whole new level.

Cmon postman, you know that no one ever uses the dreaded trolleys. For anyone thats 6 foot plus like me it gives you back strain. Walking round with a trolley literally feels like you're dragging the work along as you stop-start from every call.
The better solution IMHO is to break the delivery into smaller loops so that the bags are lighter. And if walking round with a lighter bag is still a struggle then you would be better off doing something else.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

The workload is crazy
When you see shrouds overflowing full of parcels and York's full of oversized on a round you know you're delivering everything and the kitchen sink (clearly our sister company can't handle the oversized)
And whilst letter traffic has reduced, our last revision extended some of the duties and rendered them unworkable in the times.

Considering the massive pension deficit the government/taxpayer has taken on, they're on track to make a huge loss overall.thedonkey wrote: ↑26 Jan 2022, 16:40I don't believe the company has ever lost a million pounds a day. It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Trouble is one of the first questions a DOM is likely to ask if you get an injury is "Were you using a trolley?" If you weren't and the walk was designed for using a trolley, won't it then go down as a blameworthy?POSTMAN wrote: ↑30 Jan 2022, 20:45I know mate-I know.postslippete wrote: ↑26 Jan 2022, 17:35
