Re: you last sentence regarding the rep. It’s is quite an interesting and difficult point that puts reps in a tough position. Do nothing and have no involvement as HQ are saying and it will still come in and be done shoddily and unfairly or get involved with your DOM and make sure that at the very least everyone takes an equal share of the pain and the workload is shared out as evenly as possible. Damned if they do damned if they don’t.fb1969 wrote:If RM wanted to help the posties they would be doing things like hiring extra vans so that one of a van share doesn't have to walk or bus out and back from delivery. Other than non-drivers there is no clear information on how they will decide who works Mon-Fri and who works Mon-Sat, it mentions seniority but doesn't say how that will be done - will the most senior be asked what they want to do, or will the lowest be told what they will do. A split workforce will be in RM's favour.
The compulsory new hours will have a part timer's finishing time on a Fri and Sat is later than a full timer, how do they work together. A part timer is down to do 5 hours on a Saturday, how does that fit in 5 hours delivering parcels and packets! Our van share has been getting 60 parcels recently, with 5 hours at 20 per hour that only leaves time for 40 smaller packets - that is about the minimum we ever get on a regular basis and doesn't allow for Specials and Signed Fors. No overtime on a Monday when you have double mail is just creating more problems.
Screwed up company run be clueless idiots without the slightest clue of what actually goes on in their company. Union too busy ranting and raving and taking 10 minutes to say what they actually mean. Despite the CWU instructing reps not to get involved in any of the planning, I expect ours will be rearranging everything as soon as he can.

I guess RM don’t see FT and PT working together on van shares for a long long time.fb1969 wrote:If RM wanted to help the posties they would be doing things like hiring extra vans so that one of a van share doesn't have to walk or bus out and back from delivery. Probably the only way the Saturday hours will work is FT coming in say 7am, not touching any letters on their own round just getting all the parcels sorted then going out at 9.30, finish time 2.30pm (or whatever it is at your office) PT then come in at 9.30 and do zero prep, just come in to a few yorks of parcels, load up and away you go. Non drivers on a Saturday will be the ones doing all the prep/D2Ds.
No OT Monday so they’ll just hope any cutoffs can be absorbed into your Tuesday workload. 1st class posted Friday, delivered Tuesday the new norm?
What could possibly go wrong?!
Agree about the company and union. One completely clueless making things up on the spot without any thoughts of how it might impact the business long term. The other waffling on for hours over Facebook when a few hard hitting campaigns is all it needs:
week 1: postie given disciplinary warning for having a heart attack on delivery.
week 2: bullying, harassment including racist remarks (Liverpool was it?) made to stressed out hard working posties by management.
week 3: posties having to resort to universal credit at this tough time as company illegally stops paying them in full when they have annual leave, meanwhile Rico earns £6m.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

Unless I’ve read it wrongly your example of how Saturdays will work looks like it has everyone in working. RM only want 50% of staff in on that day.

It's viable for large branches of shops like Sainsburys as they've got large car parks that they can use for the queues but for smaller shops to have socially distanced queues you'd have to close the roads to traffic as the queues would have to go right across the road in order to maintain 2m front and back and also side to sideA2B wrote:Just seen that the boss of Sainsburys has said to expect social distancing ques until at least SeptemberSpacePhoenix wrote:Social distancing isn't viable long term, for a typical row of shops, for social distancing to work for say a row of 10 shops, the queues will be across the road and onto the pavement. Is hiring extra vans even an option for RM atm - are the van hire places actually open? It'll be a little hard for RM to hire in extra vans if there's no van hire places open, + you've got other vans will be trying to hire extra vans as well

Not sure if I've got an handle on this Saturday thing, but I was presuming if you are paired up with a colleague covering two duty walks, and you are both 'van drivers' you would alternate your Saturday's in completing 'parcel delivery' only...and the other guy would take a rotating day off/or would it be the same static day off the week they are in on Saturday....but could it be that you would 'both' be covering Saturday deliveries on other walks were 'other guys' have you stumped on seniority or don't drive? Could you basically - due to the way the cookie crumbles - be working every Saturday?

It'll vary from office to office mate, I doubt seniority will be involved much unless it suits management since reps have been told to refuse to get involved.

I work in a a SPDO, only 2 staff and 1 day off cover, and I was told yesterday by my colleague, not the manager, that as from this Saturday, one of us would stay in our office delivering only parcels, packets, Specials etc. The other member of staff would be going to the main delivery office to deliver the same there. Luckily for me it’s my weekend off, but none of us have worked at the DO before so we will be working blind as there won’t be any training on the rounds. Not looking forward to it at all.

So why aren't we employing extra Saturday staff to help out if we are not closing?? Royal Mail say that these are only temporary measures but the company are going through a lot of trouble to introduce it. What happened to paying staff to do overtime?? In my depot we got plenty of staff wanting to work their days off.norris9 wrote: Food is a lot more important than letters and typically supermarkets employ Saturday staff. Plus we aren't closing, we just ain't bothering to deliver letters.
Just seems to me that Royal Mail are trying to give us extra work but don't want to pay us for it. They choked at the thought of giving us another hour off the working week

I agree. I think working Saturdays will go to those who don't mind and/or those who delivered the packets at Xmas.
And unlike other couriers we don't get paid per parcel delivered,so whether youre capable of delivering 20 an hour or you bring most of them back, it doesn't matter as long as you finish on time.

it was mentioned in our office today by the manager that an option they have been told was one week you get saturday off the week after tuesday1560loopsayear wrote:Not sure if I've got an handle on this Saturday thing, but I was presuming if you are paired up with a colleague covering two duty walks, and you are both 'van drivers' you would alternate your Saturday's in completing 'parcel delivery' only...and the other guy would take a rotating day off/or would it be the same static day off the week they are in on Saturday....but could it be that you would 'both' be covering Saturday deliveries on other walks were 'other guys' have you stumped on seniority or don't drive? So no overtime on Saturday and Monday so effectively an overtime BAN. How are any of us meant to clear the mail when every day is a struggle and it's only going to get worse. The business runs on overtime every day in fact apart from the odd days when the mail does drop, and no one is denying that.
The only reason for this move is an attack on the union its employees and this is not about safe guarding its people. If it was the problem would of been sorted weeks ago.
No overtime means more savings for Rico and co. The share price will rise in his favour and when the timing is right he will sell and bail. All goodwill and going that extra mile will stop for me. I think everyone needs to look at the bigger picture here. Look after yourselves people, we could be in for a bumpy ride.

I work in a small office with 10 union members and 15 non, we have been told to adapt new working arrangements this Saturday by the area manager.
We aren’t allowed a union rep but we have an area rep who passes the info and we are to refuse the new arrangements while he refuses to speak to our manager.
We are to tell the manager that on Saturday we would like to deliver our usual duties.
On any other day we would be expected to clear anything in the office if under our time.
If only the parcels have been sorted and we are instructed to go out, can we refuse and ask for the letters and packets to be included in our duty and what if he refuses we can’t just go home after delivering our own the parcels.
Thanks
