Your forgetting this will effect all the pipeline processing and MGV drivers. Royal Mail will be able to commence the inward operation later knowing there is no first wave of work.

The second wave would not start till around 4 in the morning and one wave will take longer per batch and this is why your work will not be in your office till after 8 in the morning.

Start times are calculated on duty builder by how long it takes the first wave of work to be performed before the second wave arrives. On one wave there is no work until then. In terms of flats parcels and non mech work then you may have some duties which start a little earlier.

This is Royal Mails key strategy for their business plan and will decimate the postal industry which is why the CWU are opposed to it and blocked it.

Now the 3 o'clock letter has been agreed by of com and cannot be changed without their agreement. Sure some deliveries go past 3 o'clock but the vast majiority of walks across the UK do not as thousands of test letters posted per year indicate.

60/40 my arse more like 40/60, sometimes 50/50 :mad :wave :wave

Thing is Glenno we're not actually talking about doing away with wave 2, What we're really talking about is doing away with wave 1 and sequencing it all with an expected dispatch time to your D.O around the time your wave 2 is dispatched at the moment or in reality probably even later so it doesn't really matter whether you get a 60/40 split or a 40/60 split.

A bit like doing away with the 2nd delivery only it is really the first delivery that's gone because we don't leave our office until 10 or 11 o'clock. As for 8 til 4 some of ours don't start till 9: though that should be looked into because there's a helluva lot of wasted time there.

Obviously one of the main drivers was the cost of the night operation but another was the loss of indoor work in delivery offices due to sequencing the mail and the changes in the mail streams, Royal Mail had to introduce a large number of part-timers into the business to offset this and that meant moving the delivery operation forward to a time that would suit part-time working.

In the days of night shifts we left the office on delivery at around 0645, At the time they struggled to fill part-time posts that started at 0645.

The irony is probably the best way to protect full-time jobs at the moment would be for delivery staff to move back to a six day week, not that anyone is suggesting that this would fly because we would lose a great deal of part-time jobs in the process and personally I don't fancy going back to working 6 days a week.

I think the union screwed up on a grand scale by buying into the resourcing "tools" Royal Mail use at the moment especially the IWT, We've legitimised a savings weapon that I don't actually believe accurately reflects the work done in a delivery office or even how it gets done, at least in a poorly represented/managed office.

There are more than a few scare stories popping up in my area where offices have been reporting unrealistic results for a considerable time and since these tools basically cannibalise an office eventually if you run out of fat to eat you start eating vital organs and inevitably the whole operation collapses in on itself.

Six shorter days would hopefully mean shorter delivery spans.

I recently worked my day off for 6 hours.
Started at 8.20.
It was incredibly stress free.
If I could keep my current full time wage and move to a 6 day 36 hour contract, I would be happy to do it.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Fish I totally agree with you and said at last years conference and have been contestant all along that buying into the delivery tools weakens the union at all levels.

Some believe that we can out science Royal Mail and yes the union have some very good experts on the tools but so do Royal Mail and it has become a chess game where we make a move to our advantage on the IWT ect and they then make a further move. The problem being is that in the 1500 delivery offices we have Doms and Reps who do not have any training on the tools and no confidence in them.

Ofcom have no intrest in EP or IWT , geo route and are only intrested in items per work hour as an effiency measure which is why Royal Mail are trying to make savings on this measure.

Sadly we seem to be in the minority and some reps are happy to allow the tools to dictate their lapsing and duty structures.

I do believe we need to wake up and get back to collective bargaining deciding the duty structure and rescoucing and not what comes out of a computer which is often based on flawed information.

Back in 2003 when we had two deliveries you have to remember that 95% of work was going out on the first delivery and apart from those areas and offices who kept to streaming the Mail and even that was difficult In my office we kept our rebate and Mail sort locked away and someone took bolt cutters to the lock? by doing 95% of the work on the first delivery many second deliveries were cut and some areas like the North East had one second delivery to seven first deliveries hence the number of part times they have.

So one delivery was the answer back then. But let's be clear the 6 day week was never the answer and is not the answer now. Postmen and women in deliveries had campaigned for a 5 day week for years and only got it in 2003 and why cause some offices did not want to work longer either on a Saturday or during the week. remember in 1987 all offices had an option to move to 5 day working most did not cause it meant offices had to lose deliveries in order to self fun rest days .

Any further news on this? I understand the PEC met yesterday on this matter?
Considering the impact this will have and that Royal Mail have said its in next years business plan, the lack of information is terrible, come on Dingo, give us an update?

Not yet, they haven't managed to come up with the overarching benefits to the members yet. I think they are trying to link it to the incentive scheme but they haven't managed to come up with that yet either :cuppa
