Ltommo - its a bit harsh on the lad - he only comes in a half hour early - now how about some of the loonies at my office - they start at 0640 or supposed to - but come in at 0445 - 0500 without pay and then use their cars on delivery and then come back for overtime - now THAT is wacko. I actually have a job doing the 25 hrs a week I do now - I had my hours bought down - from 40 to 25 - last may - I sometimes work an hour or two if necessary - some here are working 25hrs + because we have so many part timers. These so called "savings" amounted to 92p per week. This really is a mad house.

Which office - I've worked in 2 (I'm only part time)

Office A

Start at 07:30 : Advance prep never done on part time frames
Bundle up 8:30 - 10:30 : Any time between accusations of laziness/incompetance from managers
Last Letter 14:00 - 16:30 : Depending on walk length and mail volume

Some (nice) walks are less that 3 hours, others are over 4 1/2 hours. Management have known that some walks are dangerously long for over 2 years but still do nothing about it.
Drivers - never ask them to take packets out (One of the drivers actually asked me why I never take all the bags out with me - I didn't bother to ask when he would look for a new Job)

Management Gripes (WTLL) - Tuesday Mornings (If management have new propaganda or threats)

Leave office due to bullying from management

Office B

Start 07:30 : Advance prep usually done
Bundle Up 08:00 - 09:00 : Time variable due to mail volume (No accusations - what a relief)
Last Letter 13:00 - 15:00 : Still depending on walk length and mail volume.

Most walks seem to be better lengths.
Drivers are more helpful - especially if you can't fit packets into the bags.

Management Gripes (WTLL) - No distinct pattern (Not that I take any notice)

As a part-time spare, unless management leave you on a walk for several weeks you'll only get a Tuesday off. I now remind them when I'm due a weekend off.

Later starts = later finishes
How will I get to the school gates in time??

Easy - never work over (enjoy the dismayed look of horror on managers faces when you remind them that you don't do overtime because they keep forgetting)

Tommo, your the best,

You sound like your willing to pull up your sleeves and go in charging.

Everyone - you all need to look at the bigger picture, stop rushing and start enjoying the job again, we all know that if everyone started to do the job properly the work would never get out and it will be the management team that start blowing out with stress and other stress realted illness......lets see how they can handle the attendance procedure process and play them at their own game.

What you all rushing home for anyway......to sit in front of the telly and pull your plonker????
Get a life people.

Stop being your own worst enermy and start fighting back, or are you just a bunch of PUSSY'S ????

They're 3-ish to 3-45+ depending on if we get hammered.
Plus we're on the vans, take our breaks ect
At the start of us going on the vans things we're bad,it's calmed down a bit as the dom is getting wise.
But we're still cutting of some days.
One day we had 2hrs to do a walk. :nana

im a full time reserve in a rural ne office
so i have done about 37 different duties out of an office total of 55
they are trying to reduce the number of duties
and as cwu rep i am trying to stop them
other problems are much the same as every other office
people come in early
take their cars
scared of the managers
new starters are lied to as a rule
bags overweight
we only have 15 walks
the rest are all van beats
some rurals can take 4 1/2 to 5 hours plus break plus travel to and from delivery
the furthest last del point i know of is 35 miles from the d/o
some maybe further

New to this site, but the difference in offices is staggering.Ive been on the job for over 15 years, but this is how our office runs.
5-6am prep.
6-whatever sorting.3 different sort times as theres not enough frames for the ammount of people,so each ailsle takes it in turns to go first.Sorting finished by 6.45.Prep from there on.Let out of office 810-820.
Ive 503 drops, but most houses have bloody long driveways. The most drops in the office has 614.
As I cant get a transfer closer to home,I travel 28 miles to work,I get in at 430,but dont start till 5,simply for the fact to get a parking space. We have resisdent parking and our car park is very small. If I dont get a space I have to walk over a mile to the office, out of the resisdents zone. The ammount of people who by the ammount they have put in their frames at 430,they have to get in around 4.Idiots.If it wasnt for the fact I need that parking space there is no way I would get in that early, but at least I can make a coffee or tea and watch the tv for 30 mins.At least we got that out of our budget,if not anything else.

Since the lads and lasses in our office have ALL started to use the vans it has caused mayham for the management. They have now had to start taking walks out themselves since they just cannot cover the duties. They keep complaining because we are cutting off the sorting on a daily basis now leaving quite a bit still for sorting. They complain we're not pulling our wait but they have cut us to the bone replacing full time staff that have left with part time staff which do not do any sorting.

Full time duties in our office start at 5am with 2 hours sorting up until 7am then you start your prep. At 8.15 the missort van arrives and your back on the sorting for 10 mins or so then back to prep with our meal relief (which all now take) around 8.45 on the vans for 9.30am then on delivery. Times vary for the walks ranging from 3 hours to over 4 hours the local CWU reps are currently after reviewing these walks but are hitting a brick wall and are currently in disagreement. The toss manager has also submitted proposals to take another 200 hours out and of course he has been told where to go in no uncertain terms.

I may be wrong but did you did say your a new postie. When I started on my walk it used to take me till 2.00 but now I know how to do it quickly - short cuts and that. I am unlucky if I get finished at 1230 on a normal day.

I suppose it also depends if you are on the same rounds weekly.

I am a new postie in the town I'm currently living in. But I have done the job for over 2 years so know what to do, its just getting used to new areas and rounds that I've never done before that delay me I guess. If I get put on the same walks regularly I should be fine, but if I'm doing something new every week, I'll forever be finishing late

Joys of being a floater..
