Agency staff can cover someone on holiday but not someone on the sick from what I can gather.

The problem is for the company is the ODM clearly doesn't work and will lead to more USO failures resulting in heavy fines effecting their profit margins plus loss of contracts which can take a year to claw back leading to more financial woe for the company.toonshola wrote: ↑17 Jan 2026, 18:51To be fair to Royal Mail they lobbied and begged Ofcom/government for around 6 years to change the uso so they could save hundreds of millions a year. Finally Ofcom have approved the change and now they have the cwu saying nah sorry you can only have half those savings. Can’t really blame them for digging their heels in for the ODM.A2B wrote: ↑17 Jan 2026, 18:43I believe that is a yes to both of your commentsclashcityrocker wrote: ↑17 Jan 2026, 18:30Unless "heavy and light" is going to save the business £350 million (like ODM was supposed to) there is no point in trialling it.
If the CWU have come up with a plan to save the business £350 million at the expense of the workforce then they are truly finished.
Told that local and area management think it's the only system that will work but management at the top have said no go as not enough savings.
Also told that RM want to claw back all the money lost through the failed trials by reducing the 2026 budget so expect even more failing offices
Surely we are gunna get some clarity in the next couple of weeks about what USO system is going to be brought in as before Xmas Royal Mail stated they wanted to start roll out in January 2026…….clock is ticking.
It has to be done right.
Otherwise it's a worse outcome for the company and ultimately the staff as well in the long run.
The union will always try to protect jobs in a responsible way and some of the financial troubles the company have seen in the last six years have been brought on by themselves.
COVID share handouts spring to mind.

That sentence alone, demonstrates why English is such a difficult language to learn to use in conversation
’You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new.’

No docket at ours, early sorting or days off, they are offering Saturday off for working your day off on a ad hoc basis.

Same at ours today without the Saturday off bit. Carnage this morning as we are already failing badly. Most were leaving the office over an hour later than normal as the early morning sorting crew hadn’t been in. We have been here before and they haven’t learnt.claretandblue wrote: ↑19 Jan 2026, 08:10No docket at ours, early sorting or days off, they are offering Saturday off for working your day off on a ad hoc basis.

Re: Overtime ban incoming, allegedly
We had an experiment with something similar last year (Tuesdays and Saturdays). Supposedly it was open to everyone, though I didn't hear of any 'legacy' staff going for it. I believe it was abandoned after a few weeks because it made the understaffing even worse on those two days (bumped things up to a Royale with Cheese).
The machine stops.
