Well, when it’s time for our repick, I won’t be getting a single duty as I don’t have the seniority. So my thoughts are, there’s no benefit whatsoever driving for these fookers as a paired duty, so I’ll be picking a non drivers role. Take a trolly out, back on time job done. Managers won’t like it, but I just don’t see why you’d want to be a driver in this ridiculous new system as a paired set up.

I think the idea is that those light loops will still be walked. Sure, the driver might take the van and hop in and out, but RM's expectation will not be that the walker sits in the cab shouting encouragement.
Will the walker be going past loads of houses? Probably. But it will still be more efficient than driving round the loops two in a van.

Is the driver (same person each day) always going to be only doing the 1c and parcels, alternating between the sides each day as the passenger (again same person each day) does the same but with all mail? If so, then the passenger is always going to have heavy each day. How is the driver delivering the mail? Walking the loop with only 1c and packets is very inefficient. Driving it by moving the van every few meters is ridiculous, but then they'll have lots of larger parcels that need delivering too so might be the only option.

The driver will be driving, planning the route, organising the parcels, then getting out and doing a share of the parcels and 1C. It's more work than the passenger, it's not even debatable - why do you think the term 'van assistant' was coined for Saturdays when people are doing only 1C and parcels all day?

It's more work than the passenger, it's not even debatable - why do you think the term 'van assistant' was coined for Saturdays when people are doing only 1C and parcels all day?

Explain your comment "sitting in the passenger seat for a decent amount of your shift" ? Does sound like your putting too much emphasis on your role.

Does your partner not deliver any parcels?
Do they not help you load the van?
Do they sit in the van and watch you work?

Again, where are you getting me saying that the passenger isn't helping out? When 2 people are in a van zipping about doing the tracked and 1C the passenger will be spending a greater amount of time sitting in a seat vs when they are doing the loops part of the delivery. Ask anyone who rotates the driving and passenger sides and they will most often prefer the passenger side, it's not a bad thing! Too much emphasis on the driver role? Well, sorry to break this to you, but if no one drives, the run doesn't go out - it's kind of important - it even states it in the 26 page Appendix that DM26 "materially changes the importance of driving", for some people it's not worth the hassle. And again, it's on the part of the shift where only 1C and tracked are being delivered - the 'light' part.

Why would being the driver make you go sick?
You get paid to work whatever your contracted hours are.
