Standard of new starters

Post by Walter sobchak »

Is shockingly bad.

They range from gormless at best and bone idle at worst.

Guy I was training today wore huge DJ style headphones out of delivery and wasn’t the least bit interested in learning the job.

Thats part of the problem when pay drops closer to minimum wage for what is still a physically demanding job. RM are not attracting people who see it as a long term career anymore but people who see it as just another temporary job. When pay and conditions become less competitive the overall quality and retention inevitably suffers.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

And he'll probably get six months out of the job because they're desperate to keep people regardless. It seems incredibly difficult for new starts to get fired. The last few that I'm aware of have been for extremely frequent absences from the outset, yet have been on the receiving end of far more grace than long-serving staff ever got at the start of their employment with RM.
Any Questions?
Yeah, how do I get out of this chickenshit outfit?

If you are training someone why would you accept this type of behaviour. The old hands who trained me wouldn't have and I would have been told it wasn't acceptable. If you want the best from people lead by example.

TBF our recent recruits, who are in their early twenties, are really good. Two have been on seemingly permanent sick leave, but are the ones who didn`t want to be here in the first place. I`m amazed they`re still here. The good ones have the right attitude and have been looked after by the senior posties. It`s in our interests that they stay. When I say "our" I mean fellow posties. Couldn`t care less about what management want.

You cared enough to make a public statement contrary to your contract of employment.

The two new starters that have gone on "long term sick" at our place have in fact been put in some royal mail limbo space after filing grievances against managers- both separately and both for the discrepancy in treatment they were recieving.

The guy who has been off since January was sick of the legacy non-driver he was chauffeuring about being allowed to clock out early and go home, while new guy got told to go back out or work indoors. The one who went off in November was sick of clearing 2-4 days mail every day on various duties while another new start (who, coincidentally, is our COMs next door neighbour's kid) got put on a cushy single van duty on week 4 of employment, where he remains....

For some reason Royal Mail have both these people down as "sick" despite us all knowing what's going on

Just putting it out there what Royal Mail attracts these days for new recruits.

Whether a new recruit stays or leaves is out of my hands hence why I couldn’t care less.

Is this the mystery illness that the company always claims is decimating offices up and down the land?
