What actually keeps you in the job?

Post by Gingerbread Fred »

I'm absolutely curious to know what keeps us all in this job?

Money - not far off min wage
Sick Pay - slashed
POAL - gone
Annual leave - the bare minimum
Early finish - :left:
Quality of service -
Bullying managers
Colleagues that would step over their dying granny for 10 fewer DPs
Walking a half marathon daily, ruining feet, knees, shoulder & back

Yet, here we are, constantly moaning but never making a change. What is it keeping us from working a Mon-Fri elsewhere for similar money now?

Money - well above minimum wage when you include pension contributions.
Sick pay - 6 months on full pay. Is that your definition of slashed?
POAL - unnecessary when you are on 6 weeks annual leave anyway.
Annual leave - see above.
Early finish - 3pm is still a lot better than a lot of jobs.
Quality of service - ?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Money - still enough for me plus NRA60 this year
Sick Pay - rarely go sick
POAL - 20 years service
Annual leave - the maximum
Early finish - still alive and well in our DO
Quality of service - I still try

PS I plan on retiring in 5 years.

Legacy contracts are nowhere near minimum wage FFS. :arrrghhh

The jobs no hard mate. Do what you can and bring the rest back, it’s that simple.

Hey Gingerbread.

Money - is ok with no mortgage, getting close to minimum wage now though.
Sick Pay - disappointed at union members for agreeing these terms in the last pay deal, but luckily I put aside a small amount every week for sick pay should I need to use it.
POAL - already get 6 weeks, so not required.
Annual leave - already get 6 weeks, I was asked to book 7 weeks last year ?
Early finish - these hours suit me, 6:15 start is good, finish either 1:55 or 2:35.
Quality of service - we are all doing our best out there and giving our all
Bullying managers - stand up to them and let them know you won't be bullied.
Walking a half marathon daily - is generally healthy.
Another job - I think I may struggle in another role as you get comfortable doing the same thing. Days pass quickly and turn into weeks, then months.

The best part is catching the train twice a day, especially when they run on time. :wave

Money is fine for me
Sick Pay not long had nearly 2 months off on full pay. Nothing wrong with that.
POAL never used it
Annual leave better than most
Early start is 6:40 and latest finish is 2:15
QoS do my best
Managers are sound
I have a few work mates the rest I talk to when needed
Walking keeps me kind of fit

I'm in a similar position to most of the respondents on this topic......legacy contract, over 20 years service, drawing NRA60 pension etc. I'm planning to leave in just over 2 years time, and I don't particularly want to go through the rigmarole of applying for another job. The only thing that's a bit s**t from my point of view is our finishing times. 4.30pm on our longest days (3.50pm on Saturdays!), and our area manager is keen to push it back to 5pm if he can get away with it.

tenner a week into a personal savings account and request unpaid leave is the same, as they suggested.
some people think that buying a week via poal is giving them a free week off, it doesn't, you still pay for it over the year

Applying to other jobs and hearing nothing back. That and the DO is practically a stones throw away, other than that it's s**t and I want out.

We were put on 3pm finishes on a Saturday when van shares started in my unit back in 2010. Nobody in my office has been able to get to the football gtound for the kick off since then......we've NEVER been allowed to leave early, even when there's absolutely no work to do. We've always had to hang around until finishing time. As I said, it's a bit s**t where I work.

I enjoy the outdoor part of the job and I haven’t come across something that I think I’d enjoy doing more… yet.

I’m constantly looking though.
