Was the slaying of POAL a ruse to save £5 million on employer pension contributions & NI via ALU?
Well……..
This theory seems to be gaining traction.
Have we been played (radio silence)
& are we playing into their hands by all rushing for ALU?
Hmmmm….

Re: Was the slaying of POAL a ruse to save £5 million on employer pension contributions & NI via ALU?
Okay.
average £50 per wk (employer pension contribtions & enployers national insurance)
x2 wks ALU (or 1.5 if you wanna split hairs over service lenght)
equals roughly £100 employer saving per 2wks ALU
now…..
if just 50,000 opg’s rush for 2wks ALU
50,000 x £100 = £5,000,000 (£5m)
that is a conservative estimate

Now,
Much crowing will be made about how “this only applies to 4 wks out of 6”
But….as you have all seem an read
ALU should be limited to blocks of 2 days to ensure take home pay does not drop too low
& thus they will achieve the objective via
stealth.
N.B note that all london and drivers have qualified, why? because they consider them the most important.
We were the low hanging fruit.
I rest my case my learned friend.

This makes sense. A great way to find the managers’ bonuses.

yes, of course….but as i said……the golden goose of “london” & the drivers were always going to be protected,
the real numbers (and where the £5m saving comes
from) is the 100,000 OPG’s out in the provinces, the “low hanging fruit”
An easy £5 mill
Don’t play the game, let it go.
Don’t take ALU
Force them to bin a whole level of management instead.

£5 million is the equivalent of £50 per worker per year?2chorizon wrote: ↑11 Feb 2026, 14:01yes, of course….but as i said……the golden goose of “london” & the drivers were always going to be protected,

£1 per week off the wages bill for each one!
Not a lot when you consider the amount RM spend in total.
Infact it's peanuts in the general scheme of things.

The theory is gaining traction .....where exactly?
How do you know we are all "rushing" for ALU?
I thought ALU wasn't open until April?
If the climate was a bank, they would already have saved it.

No. It was a change to HMRC rules on wage deductions and the minimum wage.

Never heard such a load of nonsense in all my days. Proper conspiracy theory, tinfoil hat stuff.
Must be exhausting living life with this level of paranoia.

If people take unpaid annual leave they will save about £14 in pension contribution for every full-time day taken.
The NI saving will be negligible as they would have saved that under the old scheme except it would have been spread out over the whole year rather than it being applied in specific weeks per person.
Is the restrictions on the purchase of annual leave a ruse to save on those things? No, it's complying with employment law.
