1 in 4 Saturdays

Post by boristhespider »

Hi - I'm posting this on behalf of a friend and i'm hoping someone may be able to offer some advice / guidance as from the sounds of it the office union rep is being worse than useless.

The office my friend works at brought park and loop in a phased process over the last 6 months starting with one postcode prefix and then adding the other two a few months later. Before park and loop the duty that my friend ( a 30hr part timer) had his name against had been being absorbed but following park and loop he was put back on this duty that had now been added on to a neighbouring walk- this was on a four day week basis due to his part time hours. All was going fine and the managers even complimented him and his van sharer for doing such a good job as they were the only ones not leaving in every day.

Then two months ago my friend was taken off this walk without warning and became an office floater, it was then announced that the managers had discovered that park and loop would only work with full time staff due to the 1 in 4 saturdays off. Turns out the managers were struggling to fit everyone in for saturdays off as the staff that had been specifically brought in to work thur, fri, sat to cover for the 1 in 4 had only been on temp contracts and had been let go due to overstaffing!! So all the part time staff have now been taken off their permanent walks and turned into holiday/day off cover. As a result of this the managers are saying that they can no longer guarantee the 1 in 4 for part time staff and at time of writing my friend hasn't had a saturday off in nearly 8 weeks. Apparently the office rep originally got straight on the case and said it would be sorted as not only was it discriminating against the part time staff it was going against the 2010 agreement. However there is a rumour going round the office that the union rep is preparing to agree to the no saturdays off for part timers in order to push through the duty re-pick that can't happen until park and loop is running smoothly.

Obviously my friend is very disgruntled with this as with the later finishes on a saturday he was at least going to get more of them off but from the sounds of it he might end up with none!! Can anyone advise if this is all above board and if there is anyone higher they can take it to if the office rep is just selling them out.

In theory it would be possible for the majority full-time staff to vote in a duty structure where the minority part-time staff have to work every Saturday to allow the 1 in 4 Saturdays for f/t staff.
Getting rid of the rep won't change anything.
Get rid of the full-timers that are stitching up their colleagues.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Not a very practical suggestion, it seems to me.

Preferably, convince the Full-Timers that it should be everyone on 1 in 4, including Part-Timers, and put forward a proposal that shows how this can be done. Then if the Rep tries to do a deal that craps on PT, challenge the Rep and vote in someone who will stand up for everyone.
When it comes down to it, full-time release reps like me don't have to do the job, the ordinary rank and file do.
Full-time reps sometimes need reminding who they represent. There's no time like the present...
