Whistl - Mail Firm Suspends E2E Services

Post by STEWYMAC »

Mail Firm Suspends Services
The Whistl company, which runs privatised mail delivery contracts in London, Liverpool and Manchester, has suspended all services from today.
Workers have received redundancy notices this morning.
Whistl, formerly called TNT Post, delivers business post such as bills to households in dense urban areas.

A bit more info:

"To stem the losses from the operations we have taken the difficult decision to suspend the current E2E service during the review process and all mail will now be delivered through our long-standing downstream access service until we have concluded the review."
A spokesman added the firm would begin consultations with those employees affected and their union representatives to look at ways of securing the continuation of the service.
Whistl's E2E delivery network enables the customer to mail letters, large letters and letterboxable packets for final mile delivery by Whistl.

This is massive news.

What about all those delivery offices that have had to make 'savings' as a result of the work going down from Whistl being in their area? That's a lot of work that will be coming back surely. Perhaps we can employ the Whistl posties faced with redundancy to help make up all the hours we previously lost :left: Round and round we go on the crazy circus of capitalism.

Potentially excellent new for Royal Mail and it's staff however you have to feel sympathy for the average Whistl employee who will be losing his job with nothing like the compensation that RM employees enjoy.

Makes you wonder how sustainable their operation is in other parts of the UK .... which again could be good news for our business. RM are well placed but they need to start putting resource back into the frontline and stop expecting staff to cope with unacceptable levels of workload.

It would appear that they were all on Zero Hours contracts, as they are not being paid during consultation. :-(

CWU responds to Whistl suspending delivery services

Dave Ward Dave Ward, CWU general secretary-elect, said: "Our first reaction to this news is concern for the workers who have lost their jobs. This is of course a difficult time for them and their families and, coming less than six months after City Link folded, is the most recent effect of a crowded post and logistics market.

"Ofcom needs to pay attention to the impact of competition in the postal market which is not only causing job losses but playing a leading role ‎in driving terms and conditions downwards.

"The sad truth is if Whistl had been successful then it would have been at the expense of even more job losses in Royal Mail and the end of 6-days-a-week deliveries to 29 million UK addresses. Ofcom must understand that promoting this model of competition in a declining letters market does not benefit workers, business or the public."

im in an office in the north west that has had competition from tnt/whistl......at 1st it seemed there was a lot of mail gone from us,,,but over the months,,,,this is my opinion I don't see that much of a drop....yeah maybe were used to the loss now....who knows.

theres some decent lads on tnt,,,,they posted every other day so u saw them a few times a week.

there walks were similar size to ours,,,,ok were park and loop and doing 2,,,but they were around on each of the walks...ive talked to lads that had 4 walks in pouches on his bike...and believe me when I saw it was less tan 1 of our bags for 1 loop

knew a long time ago they could not make that pay...you see them in a street of 50 houses going to approx 15 no way can that pay.

we had a p & l revision before tnt arrived and have not had to have any changes since???

there lads on zero hours,,,,waiting for a phone call in a morning to get work....must be horrible

They might halve the lapsing for the summer now .... but I doubt it .
Always the first to shed jobs when rumours of competition were heard - I can't see Royal Mail making any increase in staffing levels to cope with the increase in street deliveries, They will simply expect their existing staff to be grateful for a slightly increased amount of job security until they collapse from exhaustion and die.
But on the bright side - a lot more mail will now get to the correct addresses a lot sooner.
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile
