CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a distribution centre spanning more than 140,000 square metres of countryside have been rejected by a government inspector.

Proposals to build the mammoth complex, sited on the A38-A50 interchange opposite Toyota’s Burnaston plant, were knocked back following an appeal.

Distribution giant TNT Post Limited and another company, Burnaston Cross Limited, made the application to build the five industrial units with a possible freight link in December 2007.

The application was, however, initially rejected by South Derbyshire District Council’s planning committee.
Not satisfied with this decision, TNT appealed the council’s verdictand the matter was brought before a government inspector who also ruled that the site should not be built.

The development included plans to build five large distribution centres, car and lorry parking facilities, a possible railway line to connect the site to the national rail, and a possible hotel site.

Alan Novitzky, the government inspector who rejected the appeal, wrote in his report: “Although the harmful effects of noise and lighting arising from the proposals could be adequately controlled, the harm identified to landscape, views and heritage assets is sufficient to lead to dismissal of the proposals.” The plans have left residents of nearby Willington pleased. John Orme, who lives in St Michael’s Close, said: “The proposed development was a great threat not just to Willington, but to the whole Trent Valley.

“If it had gone ahead there would have been similar intrusions into the countryside all the way down the valley to Nottingham.” The council described the inspector’s decision as a vindication of its stance.

Gill Hague, the council’s head of planning services, said: “We are pleased that the government inspector accepted our views on the potential impact that the Burnaston Cross proposals would have on issues such as the landscape, the listed building and the conservation area.

“The inspector’s decision is a vindication of the council’s stance and speaks volumes for the professional judgement of our officers.”

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

:chuckle :chuckle although is there a RM site nearby because they'll end up buying that instead for a fraction of the cost of building one
