India - Postman held for ganja smuggling

NEW DELHI: The special investigation team of crime branch has claimed to have cracked a gang which allegedly smuggled ganja into the capital using postal services. Police claimed they have arrested four gang members, including a postman, and recovered around 140kg ganja worth around Rs 5 lakh from them.

"The drug was being smuggled as parcels through the Indian Postal Services all the way from Orissa to Delhi,'' additional commissioner of police (crime) Neeraj Thakur said.

The racket had been running since the past six months and thousands of kilos of ganja has been brought in so far, he said. The accused were identified as Shafi Islam (25), the gang leader, Satpal Mann (55), the postman, Jaffar Ali (32) and Ganesh (35). They were arrested from near Burari post office in north Delhi on Tuesday.

Mann works at the Burari post office and allegedly used to charge Rs 200 for every kilo of ganja delivered to the gang. He is working in the same post since the past 10 years. "Islam met him six months ago and offered him a lucrative deal,'' said Satyaprakash Vasisht, the investigation officer.

Islam, hailing from Cooch Behar in West Bengal and who was residing in Burari, allegedly got his supply from Orissa in parcels which arrived twice a week.

"Each time three to four packets arrive with around 10 to 15 kilos of ganja in each packet. All the parcels are addressed to him at a fictitious address in Burari. As an insider, the postman called up his accomplices on his mobile phone and handed over the delivery of ganja at the post office itself,'' Thakur said.

Islam supplied the drug to local cartels in Burari, Jahangirpuri, Shahbad Dairy and also to some parts in Palwal and Faridabad. Ali was his associate while Ganesh was the alleged supplier of ganja. "Ganesh came to Delhi to work out details of his business with Islam and Ali,'' Thakur said.
