TNT efficiency drive saves millions

TNT UK says it managed to make savings worth tens of millions of pounds last year after it introduced a company-wide programme of efficient working practices.

The courier and storage firm says its 'Lean' programme reduced waste and unit costs and improved workflow and productivity during difficult trading conditions.

Its results for the year ending 31 December 2009 show turnover fell by around 11% to £740.6m. Operating profit reduced by almost 67% to around £12m.

In order to combat the downturn in revenues, the company was also forced to make redundancies during the last quarter of 2008, although it says these were mostly voluntary.

It says by the last quarter of 2009 there were signs that its international turnover was beginning to rise as exports increased.

During the period, TNT managed to retain its top spot in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index after it launched a scheme enabling its electricity supply at 70 UK locations to come entirely from wind and hydro-electric power sources.


TNT UK says it also has the largest zero emission fleet of its kind in the transport world after investing in 7.5-tonne zero emission delivery vehicles as part of its target for reducing its carbon footprint by 1.3 million kg of CO2 each year.

TNT runs 51 zero emission vehicles and its ultimate target is to reduce its carbon efficiency index by 45% by 2020.
