TNT full-time mail deliverers to lose jobs in shake-up

AMSTERDAM, June 26 (Reuters) - Dutch mail company TNT NV said on Saturday all full-time postal deliverers will lose their jobs in sweeping restructuring plans as TNT battles to cope with falling mail volumes and market liberalisation.
Europe's second-largest mail and delivery company earlier said it was targeting 6,500 to 11,000 job cuts as part of its annual masterplan savings target of 395 million euros from 2015 and agreed a deal about the plan with trade unions in January.
It was not previously clear how the restructuring would take shape, but TNT spokesman Ernst Moeksis said on Saturday the company gave a letter to staff on Friday informing them of the shake-up plans, which would involve thousands of job cuts.
"We're planning to submit a request for advice to the works council on July 7 and then the exact numbers will be known," Moeksis said.
Under the plans, mail deliverers and sorters working 25 hours or more per week will lose their jobs, while staff working 15 hours or less can stay, but may need to work more flexibly.
TNT had about 15,000 full-time mail deliverers at the start of the year, Moeksis said.
Like larger rival Deutsche Post, TNT has been struggling to cope with falling consumer demand, including a 6 percent annual volume decline in its postal unit due to email, while it faces fierce competition amid market liberalisation.
In April TNT said it was considering a listing or partnerships for its mail unit and a Dutch newspaper reported earlier this month private equity firm CVC Capital Partners is in talks about a partial takeover of the troubled mail unit.
CVC was reportedly asking for a 'substantial stake' in TNT Post in a deal estimated at about 1.5 billion euros ($2.01 billion), the newspaper had reported.

Change TNT to RMG and the date by about 5 years (or less) from now and this story will appear in all the UK papers!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Post unions angry at size of TNT job losses
http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2 ... e_of_t.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Monday 28 June 2010
Postal workers unions said on Monday they are shocked that so many delivery workers are to lose their jobs in a major shake-up of TNT services.
In total, all delivery workers who work more than 25 hours a week - a total 15,000 - face the sack, as TNT battles to head off competition from budget delivery firms like Sandd.
Earlier this year, union members rejected a management jobs guarantee in return for pay cuts, and agreed to accept job losses instead.
'We had expected this to affect 11,000 delivery workers and that between 4,000 and 5,000 would lose their jobs,' a spokesman for the Abvakabo union told the NRC. 'This will be a drama.'
Inge Bakker of the CNV public workers union said she was furious that TNT plans to replace long-serving staff with cheap contract workers.
'Sandd and Selekt Mail have been criticised for underpaying staff. Now TNT is going to do the same thing,' she said.

If you mean provide some realism other than "when is my uniform coming" or "how many D2Ds should I have" then yes. Not everyone is woken by the coffee though are they?

Re: TNT full-time mail deliverers to lose jobs in shake-up
tnt would have lost even more jobs if they had been paying a decent price for dsa here.
or shock delivering themselves.
ironic as they are portrayed as our competition and they not even solid at home.
seriously
what is happening to these tnt workers is outrageous
if was a purely financial decision to get rid of 11000 i wouldn't have such a problem with it.
but the loss of 11000 full timers while part timers jobs are declared safe!
sounds like a political decision to create a different sort of workforce.

Well done for highlighting it . Union members might want to bear in mind the fact that the Dutch postal unions have in recent years bargained away their members terms and conditions in return for commitments on FT jobs........oops
Still thanks to RM's advanced ATOS training program and 4.5 hour enablers , claiming DLA should be a piece of piss for for all ex RM employees
Bye

TNT Post to cut deliveries as well as jobs

TNT Post to cut deliveries as well as jobs
TNT Post is reduce its delivery services for businesses as part of an effort to head off competition from email and budget delivery firms.
'We have lost some 30% of our volume since 2000. That is one third of the company,' director Harry Koorstra said at a news conference on Monday evening.
Some two-thirds of this is due to internet, he said. And the growth in online retail had not compensated for the fall-off in traditional mail.
Deliveries cut
The company plans to stop delivering business to business and business to consumer mail six days a week, and replace it by deliveries on three separate days. Consumer to consumer post will still be delivered six days a week because of legal restraints.
Machine sorting will largely replace sorting by hand, and delivery workers will be employed on 10 to 15 hour contracts.
Some 11,000 jobs will go because of the reorganisation. News of the job losses broke on Friday.
Competition
TNT Post has to compete with budget bulk delivery firms such as Sandd and Selekt Mail, which do not comply with official pay and conditions agreements and pay workers per item delivered.
TNT's workforce has already shrunk from 31,000 to 20,000 over the past 10 years and by 2012 there will be 13,000 jobs left, Koorstra said.
The Dutch postal sector was fully opened up to competition last April.

Don't see the political decision, just the financial one. I think we can assume that TNT mail delivery trials in UK won't go any further either.chunk wrote:tnt would have lost even more jobs if they had been paying a decent price for dsa here.

A deliberate shake up of the postal network in any country is bad news, nothing to do with market forces, this is forced change!
And just think if it wasn't for privatisation we wouldn't be in this mess.
CUT OFF!!!

Sorry but providing realism whilst it may be cathartic for you does not really answer postman's question about helping others. I think however he was asking when a member has a question have you provided individually targeted advice. I honestly cant remember you offering any advice beyond the "We are doomed" and "I told you so" variety, but hey whatever rocks your boat.Night Tonic wrote:If you mean provide some realism other than "when is my uniform coming" or "how many D2Ds should I have" then yes. And the music plays on
I am paying taxes from my earnings (less than the average wage) to bail out the banksters, yet the fat cats are still up to their eyeballs in cream. If I say anything else I'll get a knock on the door
