ROYAL MAIL PRIVATISATION WILL CLOSE MIDLANDS POST OFFICES

Post Offices will close, thousands of jobs will be lost and the universal 6-day a week service will be under threat as a result of Government plans to privatise Royal Mail, Jack Dromey MP will say later today in a debate on the future of Royal Mail.

The Postal Services Bill is currently in the House of Commons for consideration of Lords Amendments. The Bill makes no requirement for a privatised Royal Mail to utilise the Post Office network meaning Post Offices are likely to close without a business agreement.

Royal Mail work accounts for over a third of Post Office Business. Speaking ahead of the debate, Jack Dromey said:

“The Government’s plans will have a devastating effect on the nations much loved postal service. The Bill threatens the universal six-day a week one price goes anywhere service valued by people across the country, and there is no doubt that post offices, an essential part of so many communities, will close.

This week we heard stories of plans to cut the workforce by a quarter, yet another massive reduction in staff in one of our key public services, in order to prepare for privatisation. The Royal Mail will simply not be able to function in the way it has for a century and more with such extreme cuts to staff.

Post offices are closing every week and hundreds of sub post masters are looking to sell up because the Government will end the link between Royal Mail and the Post Office. Over 1000 local post offices are currently closed or for sale without a buyer.

In Birmingham alone, 7 are at risk, including in the Yardley constituency of Liberal Democrat MP, John Hemming. An enthusiast for privatisation who said post offices would be safe in the Government’s hands, he stands by whilst his local post office risks closure.”
