safe systems of work for CSS MACHINEs

can anyone help me out on this.
im the team leader at a east london MPU and i have heard from the grape vine that the safe systems of work had a review........
the out come was that 2 people should operate the machine when running work.
this is ment tobe on the net somewhere but i cant find it......

as you would agree if this is true it makes like 10 times easier.

I work on the CSS machines and I've never heard this. To be honest it would only make it easier on small batches or when clearing down / loading up, thereby keeping your OEE figures artificially high. We have tried a variety of methods, 2 to a machine, 2 hours on 2 hours off, changeover after each batch and the best system we have is the last one. SSOW should be exactly that - safe and depending on space constraints especially in MPUs (delivery offices with CSS machines) having 2 people running one machine all the times would be quite unsafe, unless both operators had an almost telepathic link, due to the speeds we work at.

A CSS Safety and Ergonomic review meeting to consider job design and work methods will take place with the Royal Mail CSS Project Management Team and Ergonomics Team following CWU Conference. Input/feedback from Branches and Area Reps is welcome.

yes i agree it helps to have 2 people on clear down and when putting work on the belt. we also use the 2nd person to label up the boxes. this is a big help as the operator can spend time on mail presentation and running machine. since working this way i have found that we have very few stops and jams are next to none.

We've never had the amount of work (sorting, not machine work) to justify this. We'd have the operator working for 2 hours while the number 2 spent most of the time making tea.

We have 2 machines and 17 batches and 4 staff per shift. and a ave of 25 boxes per batch on wave1.....

We have 2 machines, 4 staff, 6 batches per machine (but we have to run wave 1 twice due to mail arrival times). The batches vary in size, some are 10-12 walks, about 12-15 boxes, some are 15 walks and 20-25 boxes. As I said, it's not so much the machine work we struggle with, it's the lack of other work which does not get sent down from the M/C until either 0200 or 0500. There is usually a couple of yorks of either flats or packets at 23.30, but 2 experienced guys can fly through that in an hour.
Tell me, has your mail centre started sending down CSS mail at 0700? Every day for the past week we've had a load arrive with the final lorry for the office instead of the final CSS lorry at 0530. I have no idea what they expect us to do with it. It's probably the M/C just making sure their clear by shifting the problem to the MPU's.
