Plymouth team pilots World Class Mail

Trailblazing Plymouth has become our first manual data entry centre (MDEC) to have a World Class Mail audit, scoring an excellent 13 points.

World Class Mail – the programme that sees frontline staff getting involved in developing solutions to issues – was designed for operational sites like mail centres and delivery offices.

That meant it was a challenge to apply the principles of the programme to an MDEC, where staff are desk-based, keying in details of mail when the address can’t be automatically sorted.

Tailor-made
Plant manager Sue Higson says: ‘We’ve launched seven of the regular World Class Mail ‘pillars’ here, plus another one – early equipment management – that most sites haven’t introduced, as it is better suited to what we do.

‘For this pillar, we’re developing a new system called Webdec.

‘Once it’s fully up and running it will give us better information about the mail and hopefully the software will be set up in a more efficient format.’

Opportunity to learn
Data keyer Fionn McCarthy (pictured) is involved in the early equipment management and focused improvement pillars at Plymouth.

He says: ‘It sounded like something that could benefit the business, and an opportunity to learn more about where the organisation is going.

‘People have generally been positive about it, but it has been tricky to apply the principles correctly as they were originally created for manufacturing, so some people weren’t sure it was right for us.

‘I think we tried to interpret some of the principles too literally at first.

‘But it’s been great for me as I’m much more involved in developing ideas and I feel much more engaged with the business.’

Plymouth – our biggest MDEC – is trialling World Class Mail in preparation for potential roll-out to our other two MDECs in 2012.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

That's all well and good, but in Stockport we have the best haircuts.

If this is true then what is the point of managers? If we're doing the thinking, the planning, the implementation then what is the point of having managers on £30k per year sitting around just drinking coffee. :hmmmm

Spewing is definitely not pokayoke.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Baka-yoke would be more appropriate for a good percentage of RM managers.

I take it Kaizen is being referred to? Works very well in Japan because they have a culture suited it at all levels of the workforce. In the UK it will always because our culture doesn't suit it, total free for all and managers who are autocratic.

If I was a Buddhist, I'd probably be gravely offended that this Yamashina character has hijacked so much of my religion's philosophy and used it to hoodwink gullible Western companies for enormous financial gain. Luckily, I'm an atheist alcoholic, so it's not my problem.

I still can't help laughing uncontrollably when WCM zealots use words like "Kaizen" though... who are they trying to kid?
You can't beat the system, but you can give it a bloody good kicking.
