CWU has today (Friday) expressed concern at the sale by Balfour Beatty of its 49% share in Royal Mail maintenance company Romec.
The maintenance, facilities management, engineering and cleaning company is responsible for Royal Mail's extensive estate and employs around 3,000 people. Balfour Beatty Workplace has sold its stake to French utility company GDF Suez Energy Services, with Royal Mail retaining its 51% share. CWU is seeking assurances concerning the jobs, terms and conditions of workers employed by Romec.
Dave Ward, CWU deputy general secretary, said: "With the sale of such a significant holding of the company, we're concerned what may lie in store for our members in Romec. We have engaged our legal advisors to fully investigate the implications of the sale and any impact on CWU members. We are also seeking urgent meetings with both Royal Mail and the new owner.
"We recognise this announcement will raise real concerns amongst our Romec members and the Union will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure our members are fully protected. This development also strengthens our desire to press Royal Mail to bring all elements of the current ROMEC joint venture back under the full control of Royal Mail as the parent company."
CWU has been informed by Royal Mail that this sale has no impact on the jobs, terms, conditions and contract of employment of ROMEC employees. CWU is seeking further clarification and assurances.

This is privatisation, the Romec members have seen their jobs constantly squeezed since the original venture was set up. You can see the writing on thedemon wrote:oh s**t the union just found out about this ..i dont think so.sort this out after you sort out our pay and the privatisation![]()
