Shame on you, Royal Mail

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

http://mrtopp.com/2012/09/16/shame-on-you-royal-mail/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I find myself registering for an account on the Royal Mail website, and I see – as usual – the options to opt-in or opt-out of the receipt of marketing materials from the Royal Mail themselves, and from “carefully selected third parties”.

Does anybody say yes to these on purpose? Or are these just there to catch out people who tick (or un-tick) the wrong box?

The Royal Mail reveals all:

Image

Yep.

If you can’t read that (it gets bigger if you click), the first set of check boxes is to opt out of receiving spam. the second set is to opt in.

In other words, the folks at the Royal Mail are hoping that you only read one set of fine print, assume that they use a consistent approach, and then check (or uncheck) all the boxes. And then they have “your permission” to spam you.

What asshats.

Their treachery is revealing, however. As suspected, nobody ever opts in. Everybody opts out. Hence trickery is required. If you think a good way to court cusomters is by trying to trick them during the registration process. Like the Royal Mail do.

Asshats.

This has been common practise for just about all opt outs in the last ten years. I am not defending royal fail but come on, lets not single out just one company. Shame on them all, it's deceptive.

Move on, learn to read, is my advice to this blogger, this is not something new that's been discovered.

If you're Spam filters are set up well your inbox will stay lean and clean. If you can't be bothered to do it, don't blame the senders or originators of the unwanted material.
Leaflets and direct mail are much more successful than email because we as a company can get them to your doormat where at least your curiosity may be aroused.

The lie that is constantly perpetuated about digital media taking over from paper falls down when it comes to advertising at least, and certainly in any posties experience, where magazines and catalogues are concerned.

You may well find if you investigate further that the biggest culprits in circulating your contact information are your bank or building society who regard you as a product to sell on to others.

Information about people is a commodity and I would be very surprised if the opt outs were worth the paper they are printed on (or not !!!).

Actually, if there's an option for contacting me by Mail (as in this case), I always tick it. It generally ends up in the recycling, but it's all extra revenue for Royal Mail. And that's what keeps me in a job. :hmmmm
