COLWYN Bay's sorting office has been saved from closure.

Royal Mail carried out a feasibility study into the future of the Colwyn Bay office but yesterday (Tuesday) announced it had scrapped plans to axe the Princes Drive site which would have seen more than 70 staff relocating to Llandudno Royal Mail

Colwyn Bay mayor, Cllr Vivienne Perry, said having to travel to Llandudno could have had an impact on business owners.

She said: "This is good news.

“Shopkeepers would have had to take time out of their day to pick up undelivered parcels or to post large items.

“Once that would have gone, there would have been the potential of another empty building.

“It is a listed building and there is not a lot that could have been done there.”

A campaign was launched by Clwyd West AM Darren Millar last summer after proposals to close Colwyn Bay sorting office were first announced.

“I am absolutely thrilled Royal Mail has seen sense and decided to keep the sorting office open,” said Mr Millar.

“Colwyn Bay is a major town in North Wales and to withdraw a facility like this would have been a major blow.”

Clwyd West MP David Jones added: “The announcement will come as a considerable relief to Royal Mail employees as well as to the many customers who value the presence of the delivery office in town.”

Royal Mail spokesperson Val Bodden said: “As part of our efforts to streamline and modernise our operations, Royal Mail has been working with postmen and women and the CWU, the postal workers union, to scope the feasibility of transferring our delivery operations from Colwyn Bay to Llandudno.

“We have listened to our colleagues, stakeholders and the CWU and we have also taken into account the space requirements for the deployment of new delivery methods in Llandudno.

“This deployment will reduce the available area originally identified to accommodate our Colwyn Bay operation.

“We will continue to work closely with the Union to look at ways to reduce our costs and improve efficiency by reviewing the delivery estate.”
