Devon Royal Mail postman hoarded 30,000 items of post

A part-time postman from Devon hoarded more than 30,000 letters and packets after not having enough time to deliver them, a court has heard.

Paul Willicott, 44, from Fernicombe Road, Paignton, kept the mail in his house, car, shed and a rented garage.

Torbay Magistrates' Court heard he had complained to his employer, Royal Mail, which has now introduced a new system.

He admitted two charges of delaying the mail. He was bailed and told he faced a community-based penalty.

In June, a member of the public spotted him putting mail in the garage, prosecutor, Stephen Nunn said.

Post Office officials investigated and found 174 undelivered packets.

In the boot of his car, they found six bags containing 798 postal packets, and 67 bags with 30,130 items of mail  in his house, the court heard.

'Snowballed'
Defence lawyer, Richard Porritt, described it as a "quite unusual case".

Willicott worked a four-hour shift but it took him five or more hours to complete the round, he added.

Mr Porritt said the situation snowballed out of control.

Willicott admitted two charges under the Postal Services Act of being an operator who delayed a postal packet or mailbag between October 2008 and June 2011.

Mr Nunn said Willicott was employed as a postman working from the Torquay delivery office from 2008 until June 2011, when he was sacked.

A number of vans were used to collect the mail and redirect it, costing Royal Mail £3,400, Mr Nunn added.

Willicott was bailed and told that he faced a community-based penalty.

He will be sentenced next month.

Why do these idiots not just work to thier time and cut off. Surely that is easier and less stressful than hoarding all that shite in your home? :arrrghhh

More surprising is how long it goes on for without RM noticing. Surely if a street consistently gets no mail there will suddenly be loads of people phoning up saying so? The amount of people I've had come up to me after one day without mail when I've delivered cut offs lead me to believe that there would be a lot of complaints...

And I bet it cost RM more than 3,400, because a lot of those packets wouldve been compensated already.

Sad to say i now truly think they are scared! The Union do nothing to help but only make things harder for Postal Workers and with them working with RM management and ignoring the membership it will get a lot worse. The term going Postal wont be so funny when it happens for real.

I can understand how some people are scared to approach management with cutoffs, but surely facing a jail sentance is more worrying? :confused

I don't think anyone sets out to hoard 60 bags of mail in their house.
Something happens one day and they can't complete. Rather than face the confrontation they take the mail home with the intention of righting the wrong the next day.
But something happens the next day and rather than put things right they make them worse. How do you begin the conversation - I've taken mail home?
You know that will lead to dismissal so you hide the problem hoping you might be able to set things straight before it gets out of hand.
But you don't.
Once you have broken the taboo of not taking mail home it is easy to do it again and again and again.........

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
