Sorry for mixing up your post for six years

AN INFURIATED resident who held face-to- face talks with Cheltenham's Royal Mail boss is celebrating success after enduring six years of postal problems.

Dean Carpenter, who lives in a basement flat in London Road, claims he was losing important letters on a daily basis because postal workers could not be bothered to walk down the steps to his front door.

The 57-year-old said the problems persisted even though he installed signs pointing to his flat.

After six years and a string of complaints, Mr Carpenter was contacted by Swindon Road sorting office boss Ian Tyrrell, who arranged to meet him for a private chat.

Mr Carpenter said: "He has agreed to put a regular postman on the route every day from now on, so hopefully it will solve the problem.


"There has been a different person every day, mostly agency staff who had no idea where they were going.

"Mr Tyrrell was a little bit restrained, but there were two of my neighbours there as well, so I think we got our point across.

"He said a regular postman had started on Monday, so the situation should be resolved. But it should never have been a problem in the first place."

Mr Carpenter, who suffers from terminal cancer, said he first complained about missing mail not long after moving into the flat back in 2003.

Most of it had been delivered to the ground floor flat above his home, including new debit cards, car logbooks and bank statements.

On one occasion, Mr Carpenter said he was even threatened with having his electricity supply cut off because he had not paid a bill which had never arrived.

After lodging numerous complaints with Royal Mail, Mr Carpenter contacted his neighbours in basement flats to see if they were having similar problems.

Several people wrote back to say they were also suffering, including one woman who missed the deadline to accept a university place because her offer letter had been delivered to the wrong flat.

Mr Tyrrell refused to speak to the Echo, but a Royal Mail spokesman said: "We are sorry to learn about the problems Mr Carpenter has been experiencing with the delivery of his mail.

"Recent actions taken by the local delivery office manager now appear to have resolved the matter."

didnt see any apology from rm mentioning messing up peoples lives eg, missing out on a scarce university place....list goes on. put it this way, the purpose of training is to see what addresses cover any particular route.. there are thousands of basement flats spread across the country in different towns, villages and cities.

and it was lucky credit cards, bank cards didnt fall into the wrong hands because of muck ups. rm reponse? oh i am sorry to hear..... bollix, they been saying sorry for far too long and the same lame excuses. sorry my arce

I see even RM management agree with the benefit of a regular postie, not the running around covering one duty or another that happens now in many offices.
